Good Goals

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

I think Iíve finally found some manageable goals!! Itís been a long time coming but the two goals per day the nutritionist help me set up has really been working out. Its achievable and I actually feel like Iím making progress. Iíve been doing at least 15 minutes of activity each day and eating fruits and/or veggies at each meal. Iím tracking it to see progress and at the end of the week if I stick with it Iíll buy myself a little something. Iíve also been tracking calories on and off. Iíve been about 300 calories over my goal each day but the calories Iím burning during the activity seem to make up for it.

Itís so funny now that Iím incorporating fruits and veggies Iím struggling a bit. Iím always wondering if Iím eating enough of a veggie for it to be considered a serving. For instance I made squash and mushroom mac and cheese. There is quite a bit of squash and mushroom but thereís also a lot of noodles and cheese. I try to have another veggie with it too but Iím finding its difficult. I donít want to eat the same stuff over and over again.

I went to the grocery store the other day to get fruit, which I normally donít buy unless itís in my basket and already picked out for me, and all they had were oranges, apples or bananas. None of which I wanted. I ended up getting bananas but I donít really like those options. I might have to look into getting dried or canned fruit to switch things up. Veggies can be difficult too. I never know what theyíll have but broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, lettuce and potatoes are a good bet. I just donít want to get stuck eating a protein with two sides of steamed veggies all the time. I mean, there could be worse things but I also want to find things are veggie packed and not so portioned out if that makes sense. Beef vegetable soup comes to mind.

Iíve been good in terms of eating something I want and eating fruit or veggies with it. For instance this morning at work we had a fundraiser and they had a lot of yummy breakfast items. I had a cup of oatmeal, a serving of egg and ham breakfast casserole and a banana and a half. Two days ago I had a craving for Arbyís so I got one beef sandwich and had it with squash soup. Something Iíve NEVER done before. Itís a good system I think. That Arbyís run normally would have been a lot different and it (almost) fit into my calories.

Getting in exercise has been going really good to. I just do it no matter what. Normally when Iím watching TV at night and it goes fast. The past two nights Iíve done 30 minutes. Itís, again, the consistency thatís exciting to me because it was so hard before. Iím up to 165 fitness minutes for the month which is a lot considering itís more than Iíve done in the last 6 months. I would love to get to 250 before the end of the month so weíll see.

I donít have meals planned for the week so it get worried when Iím in that mode because I tend to overeat. Iíll have to find some stuff to make today and beef vegetable soup does sound yummy. I get a basket Saturday which is nice so Iíll have tons of stuff then. I donít know what Iíll get yet which is exciting because Iíll have to plan meals around it. My Mom is also coming next week which Iím hoping means she can do some cooking while Iím at work. That would be a nice break if she doesnít mind. Off to start planningÖ

I'm so glad this is working for you, I think it's a really balanced approach. Beef and veggie soup does sound delicious.
I bet your mom would be happy to help with cooking while you're working. If it's something you like, you could get the recipe. :)
I also like that you only have to get 15mins of exercise, you've been able to get 30 the past couple of nights but that might not always be the case.
So happy for you!

I ususally eat the same food all of the time. I need to change up my fruits and veggies. I like them all, just don't buy them. Hope you are doing well!

It sounds like you're doing well! I know what you mean about not wanting to have the same things over and over again. You can also incorporate purees in dishes to get in more veggies without realizing it.
