Very emotional week

Sunday, October 28, 2012

As someone who tends to eat when stressed, this week was a real test of my committment to being healthier! I can't tell you how many times I have read my I will not quit pledge to stay on track.
Last Saturday a 12 year old girl, Autumn Pasquale, who had her whole life ahead of her went missing in a small town 10 minutes from my home. This is not only a town close to me in distance but also one that is close to me in that my sister and her family have lived there for 26 yrs. I have spent countless hours there taking my niece and nephews to sporting events that they have been involved in and know so many of the people in the community. Sadly Autum's body was found Monday, having been murdered by what turned out to be 15 and 17 year old brothers who killed her over her bmx bike. These boys lived in the same town, one went to the same school. I know how hard this has hit the small community and myself but I can't even begin to imagine what this has done to her family. Autumn was laid to rest Saturday, two days before what would have been her 13th birthday! My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to her family and friends.
Normally with all the emotions I have been going through since first hearing about her disappearance I would just go to the kitchen and grabbed whatever I could find and eat it. I knew this time had to be different if I didn't want to undo the good I have done for myself, so instead of eating. I came home from work every day, hugged my 2yr old nephews, put them in the wagon and we went for walks. Even though the sadness, anger, and a host of other emotions were there it was so much more comforting to be spending time with them, hearing them laugh, and seeing their amazement when they saw something that impressed them, than I ever got from trying to eat away the feelings.
The wonderful friends and support I have found here are amazing and have had such a big part in my being able to deal with the emotions of this past week differently and in a better way for my health! Thank you all!
Now to prepare for Hurricane Sandy and what she may bring! Guess I'm going to have to find some inside activities to do with the boys as I don't think we will be going outside for at least a few days.

emoticon Thoughts and prayers to all who will also be weathering the storm!! Be safe everyone!

Unbelievable! I am just now reading this... I am so sorry! It is hard when it actually hits so close to home. So tragic that a young life comes down to a possession - a bicycle at that! emoticon

It's a very good thing that you are listening to your body... if it is not hungry, don't eat. I have the same problem, Patty. When I have just eaten a couple of hours before and I find myself reac hing for chips, almonds, etc. I force myself to ask myself...Why are you wanting that? Are you thirsty? (sometimes) Are you bored? (mostly) Are you stressed? (sometimes) Then workout! Do some strength training.... sit ups.... anything... then, it usually passes. But believe me.... it's a chore!

    How terribly sad.

How did you do, with the storm? I am on Long Island in NY, and we lost power for five days but otherwise no damage, thank God.
