Disability Up-date

Sunday, October 28, 2012

So after the third denial of disability we felt defeated. We were upset by the info the doctor provided to the judge. We were unaware of the poor documentation the doctor was keeping. Things we complained about on each visit were not being documented.

We decided to find another doctor. We made an appointment with another local doctor my husband has seen for migraines and his DOT physicals. The first day we saw the new doc we had some answers and new treatment!!!! The doc really gave my husband a physical exam. The old doc very seldom laid hands on my husband. This new doc poked and prodded, found all his tender points and really checked him over. During the exam the doc noted how my husband falls asleep and came to the conclusion that my husband has narcolepsy. Well, well, well. News to us. A new prescription was written for Adderall, the drug treatment for narcolepsy. The doc also addressed my husband's poor sleep habits and gave him a sleeping pill that has worked wonders for my DH.

In addition to all this I independently decided to get my husband tested for his memory. My husband complained to the doc about his memory problems and the old doc never documented it so when we went to the hearing there was no proof of the memory issues. I got him to a doc on Wednesday and he went through some memory testing by a great doctor. A well-trained doctor. After an hour of testing my husband was falling asleep so the doc said he would have to come back for another hour of testing on a different day earlier in the morning. After the first hour of testing the doc had a conclusion. He said my husband's memory issues were "abysmal." He said with the information he got by the testing there would be no problem getting the disability and there was no way my husband could carry on a job. It was finally a relief to have someone believe us and better yet to have the written proof of our repeated complaints. Whew!!! My husband is bummed by the info and now feels stupid but I tried to tell him that this information in no way makes him stupid.

With this great ammunition on our side we will re-file for disability probably in November or December. WooHoo!!!! Someone believes us!!!!

I'm glad you're persevering -- getting disability is such a ridiculously long process for most people.

So glad to hear you found a good doctor who will listen to you and do what needs to be done. I know that has to be tough for your husband to hear but memory issues do not make him stupid at all! It's better to know about health issues so he can figure out the best way to combat them instead of ignoring them. I hope your refiling goes well and am happy that you are finally seeing some progress!

First off, I'm glad your Hubby finally has a name for his illness. But I'm sorry that he is ill to begin with. Maybe with a better Doctor, he'll get his disability. Doesn't it feel great to say, I told you so!!
