Recess, Hurricane Sandy, & Weigh In Day

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Today was weigh in day...not so pretty. I knew I hadn't had the best of weeks. Not much exercise going on this week. I really wanted to get up and do something for sure after my doctor visit the other day. I actually hurt my back the next day! It's like I have the worst luck in the world. I was outside for recess duty and one my students fell down and cut her knee. I crouched down to look and see if it was bleeding when one of the boys in the other class came running up (looking behind him instead of where he was going) and ran directly into my back! He was running with some pretty good speed so he gave me a pretty good knock in the back directly in the spot where I had herniated a disc a few years back, knocked me forward, cut my knee, forearm, and palm up. That's not even the worst part! When he knocked me forward I knocked over the poor little girl that I was helping in the first place! She landed straight on her back, luckily without hitting her head on the pavement. The little boy that knocked me over felt terrible, I assured him all was fine, it really was just an accident, and sent him on his merry way. I sent the little girl into the nurse, put a tissue over my cuts, and had the girls bring me some bandaids out from the nurse when they came back. Needless to say, my back is still not back to normal because I got hit pretty darn hard. But, I was able to do some walking today and that felt really good! I'm hoping to make a full recovery over the weekend as it's feeling better each day.

When I weighed in the morning (where I was originally going with the recess story) I found that I had gained 1.5 pounds this week...GAINED weight! What?!? I guess being fairly inactive really wasn't cutting it, now was it? I've been trying to make dietary changes, but I quite honestly wasn't the best with them this week. I did some grocery shopping this morning (which will bring me to my next story!) and got lots of healthy things. I'm hoping to make a change this week and try to be much better about what I eat. I've found that if I eat more fruits and veggies, I fill up on them and don't want as much of the junk as I used to. So, it's not that I totally stop eating it or tell myself I can't have it, I just don't want it anymore.

My mom and I went grocery shopping together this morning...along with about 14,000 of our closest friends! You see, Hurricane Sandy is headed directly for us. She's expected to be here Monday/Tuesday, with the rain starting tomorrow, wind starting Sunday night, and really damaging stuff, including gail-force winds, flooding, etc. through Tuesday or Wednesday. Everyone's taking precautions. The city of Wilmington has just declared a state of emergency and ordered a mandatory evacuation for the south east quadrant by noon tomorrow. Luckily for me, I don't live within city limits. My dad went down to the beach house last night and today to move the boat away from the river and try to get the house as ready as possible. Thankfully my cousin is helping him with that so he doesn't have to do it all alone. The grocery store was jammed, the roads were extra crowded, everything is just crazy here. The hurricane has a 90% expectancy of coming directly up through the Delaware Bay (we live about 1/2 mile off of it, if that) and just pounding everything around it. The National Weather Service is saying that the storm is already over 1,000 miles wide, so even if by some chance it doesn't come directly up the bay, we're still going to get slammed! We got the generator out and ready for when (not if around here) we lose power. Lots of bottled water. Luckily we have a gas stove, so we can actually still cook! And my dad is a champ and will actually go outside and grill in this kind of weather...crazy I think, but he just loves it! So, batten down the hatches, Sandy's a-comin!

I know what you mean about the food stores! It was we will not be getting out for months instead of a few days. It blows my mind when I look at the carts too, lots of fat foods! I am hoping that Sandy isn't that bad here in DE. Beaches look like they getting hit pretty hard though! Hope your back is doing better today. Keep Safe! Pat

Try to stay safe. I hope your back continues to feel better, and you can get back to your exercise routine...after Sandy departs.
