"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

Sometimes other people's words can hurt, sometimes wound. No one can define us. We define ourselves. Our reaction to hurtful words speaks of our character, not the words themselves.

May we always remember that we are in charge of our lives, regardless of how many others like to think they are in charge.

This was a good reminder! And I really like SWEETMNTHING's line about hitting the delete button--I wish I had had that when I was trying to calm a friend down because she got really upset at something someone said... I kept telling her not to let it bother her--let it roll off of her like water off a duck. But deleting is even better.

Easier said then done, of course... it takes self-confidence to shrug it off when people say hurtful things to you or about you and that can erode if you get too much negative feedback. Which is one of the reasons I think it's important to surround yourself as much as possible with people who are positive--that way when you do encounter that back stabbing coworker or boss who's hypercritical or family member who likes to give those nasty back handed compliments, you CAN shrug it off and know that it's their problem, not yours.

Great post, so true. It also reminds me of something my mom told me recently that she got from hearing a sermon from Joel Osteen. It was basically to the effect of "When someone says something hurtful about you, hit the delete button." I actually tried that recently in dealing with a really rude patient at work and it worked. In other words, make like a duck and let it roll off your back!

We can only control ourselves, never anyone else. Some people forget this and others need to learn it. But we, ourselves, also need to remind ourselves that we can only control what is in us. If someone wrongs us we can choose to beat our head against a wall about it or we can change how we react to it - or not react at all.
