What to expect...

Yesterday I found a cheap gym membership on Groupon and since my daughter told me she was also interested, I decided to try it. After doing a few papers, I spoke for a few minutes with the trainer who is going to do my assessment tomorrow. I told him I was on a diet since August 6th and wanted to "tone" my body. He asked me what result I was expecting....or what I wanted to achieve....hum, interesting question! I told him that my weight loss journey was for the long run (at least until December 2013) and that I just wanted to exercise, get in better shape...and while I was talking, I had to think about the second part of my answer: if I had to point an area in my body: my priority is my waist/belly, I want to get it as much as realistically possible "fat free" in there.

We all know that fat around the waist is bad for many things (could trigger heart diseases, cancer, diabetes name it) but I seriously was not even thinking about that when I walked into the gym. Because I see my journey as a remodeling and I think that getting active is more important at this stage than looking at "details"..

When he asked me the question, I was kind of surprised because I actually think that any kind of exercise will be nice, keep the muscles working, but when the trainer offered Pilates to help for that area....I was not really interested. Between my back issues, my weak ankle, I rather not do any exercise on the floor right now, it is too painful. He looked a little surprised by my answer. He told me he is used to work with overweight people .....will see........I was the biggest at the gym that day.... I think each person is different and I do not have the spirit of those "biggest looser" people who suffer like hell on TV. I want to exercise in a comfortable way, and may be push more after a few months when the weight will go away and I will feel better. Not now. Now I need to exercise at my level....and I'm not really in good shape with some much weight to carry around.

So far I've been speed walking, doing plenty of aquagym when the pool was still warm so I had to stop two weeks ago (and cleaning the house does count in working out right? emoticon ) but I'm trying to go slowly.
My last membership in a gym was six years ago! at that time I was doing classes of body pump, boxing, and a kind of zumba. Plus I was using the treadmill and the bike.

So I'm wondering : what do you like to do at the gym my Spark friends? any interesting exercise that doesn't require too much pressure on joints?

    Yoga may be better for you than pilates. It is easier, more calming, still works the muscle groups but not as advanced. I also love Zumba simply because it is fun and you burn a lot of calories. A spin class may be too much right now but the spin bike is great for burning calories, much better than the fancy ones. I just put on my headphones and try to ride along with the beat of the music and try to bike standing up during the choruses.

    I love to do the elliptical machine. I can't right now because my knee is too arthritic.

    I workout at home right now. I dance for cardio, and I do gentle yoga for my back pain, as well as some resistance band strength training.
