At the end of last year, I set out some goals for myself. This weekend, I actually accomplished one of them, even though I was expecting the worst.
The goal in question:
1. Run at least three 5Ks.
This past October I ran in my first 5K, and I want to do more of that in 2012! My time was 35:14, so the other part of my goal is to have at least one race that is under 35 minutes officially.
In June, I ran in two out of three races, and both times were well above 35 minutes. But I was still feeling good -- I had been running a lot more at the time. Then the summer of hell hit where we had temperatures above 100 degrees F nearly every day. Needless to say, running took a back seat.
I had this race looming over my head in October, and still I did very little training for it. Add to that all of the packing and moving I have been doing lately, and I figured my time would be pretty abysmal since I was so worn out.
I. Was. Wrong.
I did fantastic! First of all, I ran the entire 5k. A first for me. The only break I took was at the water station, and that was only for a few seconds while I gulped my drink down.
Second, I met my time goal!! I ended up with a time of 34:45. A personal record, woohoo!!
So I guess the moral of the story is that even when you're expecting the worst out of yourself, just get out there and do it. Because you just might surprise yourself with the results.
