So yesterday was my first cardio session since my calf injury. I walked 3.1 miles in 45 minutes. Anyone who reads my blogs will know that in the past I've been all about my times, so a time like this would have normally made me a bit sad. Not yesterday! To say I'm grateful for the ability to be walking is an understatement. I guess it took an injury that sidelined me for a few weeks to help me look at things in a better perspective.
It's been 3 weeks since I hurt my calf and I'm proud to say I used those 3 weeks to take a good look at my routines, eating habits and found some interesting new ways to continue working out without doing any of my "normal" cardio. It's been a lot of fun discovering just how many different positions I can get my body into when doing stretches and yoga poses. I held a plank for a total of 3 minutes, and discovered that reverse planking was not good for my calf. I also discovered an excellent exercise in the full body squats which I thought would irritate my calf, but seems to have helped strengthen it. I took the time to organize my meals, and tried some new healthier versions of recipes that I thought were already healthy. They turned out delicious! I bought a book for tracking my eating and the strength training exercises and as of today, I have lost 5 pounds. Go figure.
I'm finding the key to my success during this hiatus from my running has been to accept that there are other things to do with myself other than running. It was like life stepped in and revealed that there is more out there and I need to pay attention to those things and allow them to help me continue growing and experiencing new ways of doing things.
But I'm not going to lie, I miss my running. I miss it a lot. I've already decided though, after working through this experience, that once I'm back at it, it won't be the only go-to activity for me anymore....just my favorite.
