"Starvation Mode"?

Saturday, October 20, 2012

I have not yet gone on Weight Watchers. Still debating, still figuring out if it's worth it.

I have been slightly frustrated that I've only lost 7 pounds since the start of school. I figured out how many calories I'm burning each week (minimum 3500, with one week being about 5000), and also looked at how much I'm eating (between 1500-2000 calories each day, some days a little more, some days less, no snacks between meals, only drinking water). I don't necessarily see my body slimming, though it looks a little like it in my clothes. In taking measurements, it looks like I've lost about 1 inch around my waist, which is great.

So anyway, I spoke to a few people in my life who have been losing weight forever. My sister-in-law's aunt is a nutritionist, and she was talking to her about this. It was brought up that my body could be in "Starvation Mode", which may be a WW term? Basically, I'm not eating nearly enough calories for how much I'm working out, and my body is saving everything that I give it.

This is a concept that I know about, have used, have told others about, but I apparently had forgotten. (Don't you hate that?) I decided to try it out and see if I gave my body a few more calories each day, if I would lose anything. I'm PMSing right now, so I didn't have very high hopes.

I started on Thursday night during parent/teacher conferences because we had a provided meal. I ate a small dessert (as in, the bottom 2 inch square layer of a piece of pie). Then, last night while having dinner with my boyfriend and his parents, I ate about half of my meal, but then came home and again had something small for dessert.

I weighed myself this morning- I finally lost another pound! Only 6.6 more pounds until I'm in my next "decade"!

This coming week is break week at the Y, which means that I will only have Zumba on Monday and no other classes. I'm not sure how that will be for my weight loss, but we'll see.

Starvation mode is brought on by one thing only: high insulin levels, which make your body store all the calories as fat rather than using them for energy in your muscles (and giving you more energy to exercise). The only way to fix it is to eat much lower carb.
Take a look at the low-carb or Atkins groups on Spark and see how quick people lose weight. I just lowered my carbs further down to 15-30 grams/day and have lost over4 lbs. in 6 days. emoticon

I have done WW and Spark - if you are dedicated to logging food - stick with Spark - it's free! WW points plan is great and you can research it and do it yourself - the only benefit is the meetings and personal support. I live in an area where meetings are non-existent or over a hours drive away.

Try changing what you eat stick with fruits, veges, yogurt, and lean meat and avoid carbs after 2 pm - !

    Hi Maureen,
I miss you, too!

I first read about this theory on Spark. They have talked about in different terms, though, such as "Tricking your metabolism" and similar. The idea is that if you eat the exact same amount everyday and do the same exercise everyday, then your body will get used to it. Add in that if your body is used to your routine, it knows how much it needs, so if you aren't giving it enough fuel, then it's going to keep anything you give it.

I agree that I'd rather look at what I'm "supposed" to eat and the calorie range, but I have heard about this idea in terms of getting off a plateau. I will keep you posted about anything else that happens with this!

Also, I will have to tell you details about meeting Bruce's parents. It was basically amazing :)

That is Great!! I am not sure I buy into that Starvation mode- but I guess it could be true- I mean, I always thought it existed for a person who is like 5' 9" and weighs 100 lbs- then I can see the body holding onto everything it gets. I have been doing the 5 and 1 plan for 3 weeks now- and I am only getting about 800 calories a day- this past week I only lost .5 lb. I wanted it to be more, but a loss is a loss. So now you have me wondering!?

Keep me posted on how you are doing and if you decide to do WW.
I also want to hear about the dinner with Bruces parents last night???

I MISS YOU!!!
