Oat Lentil Burgers

Thursday, October 18, 2012

4 cups cooked lentils
5 cups oats
4 cups water
1/4 large onion chopped
5 cloves garlic minced
1 cup fresh parsley chopped
1 cup bell pepper chopped fine
1 cup celery chopped fine

1 TBL onion powder
1 TBL garlic powder
1 TBL thyme
1 TBL sage
1 TBL Italian seasoning
3 TBL chicken style seasoning ( found in health food stores)
1 T salt (I use less)

Place the seasonings and chopped stuff in the water and let simmer 15 minutes. Place oats in this mixture and stir. Lightly pulse lentils in blender and add to oats. Stir lightly and let cool. Make patties and place on baking sheets that have been sprayed with no-stick cooking spray. You can form the patties using the lid and ring from a wide mouth canning jar. It is the perfect size and pops right out with this method. Bake in a 350 oven for 20 minutes. Turn and cook on the opposite side for an additional 15 minutes.

This is the recipe demonstrated at this month's CHIP (Coronary Health Improvement Program). This community service was well attended and there were NO leftovers. People gave it an excellent rating.

We served the burger on a bun and let people add their favorite condiments. You may make a gravy and pour over the cooked patties for an entree. This makes a big batch. They freeze well. May wrap individually and take out of freezer as needed. Make great brown bag lunches.

Sounds good. I have never cooked lentils, but I want to try this and then I can take them for my lunches. After I try it, I can see if hubby would want them or not.

Thank you for this recipe! I rarely cook, but this sounds like I can cook it once, and save the rest of the patties for many other meals! I like your idea about the lid to make the patties too:)

They sound yummy but have way too many ingredients for my 5 ingredient limit. Enjoy!
