"OLD BAG"

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

I USUALLY GET THE INSPIRATION FOR SOME OF MY BLOGS, FROM OTHER SPARK FRIENDS. THIS ONE COMES FROM OFFICIALOLDY. WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE A OLDY?

I HAVE NEVER GIVEN THAT MUCH THOUGHT SINCE I AM NOTHING BUT A BIG GRAY HAIRED KID. I HAVE NEVER, NOR DO I EVER, WANT TO BE A G"GROW UP". TO ME, THAT MEANS YOU HAVE TO BE SERIOUS AND LOSE YOUR ABILITY TO BE SILLY. WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD ANYONE WANT TO DO THAT? AND YET, BEING YOUNG AT HEART AND FUN LOVING CAN ALSO COST YOU A LOT.

IN MY CASE, IT IS COSTING ME MY MARRIAGE. I AM MARRIED TO THE MOST SERIOUS PERSON ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH. AND IT NEVER REALLY BOTHERED ME UNTIL I WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO WORK. WHILE WORKING, I WAS SO BUSY IN THE EVENING AND ON WEEKENDS, THAT I NEVER NOTICED THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN US,UNTIL I WAS NO LONGER ABLE TO WORK. NOW, I REALIZE THAT MY ENTIRE LIFE HAS CHANGED. AND IT HAPPENED TOTALLY WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE. THE CHANGES WERE SO SUBTLE THAT I DIDN'T EVEN SEE IT UNTIL .....

JUST BEFORE MY HUSBAND WAS STRICKEN WITH CANCER (WHICH IS NOW IN REMISSION) I BEGAN TO NOTICE THAT I NOW HAVE RULES ABOUT WHO I CAN TALK TO, WHAT I CAN WATCH ON TV, WHO I CAN VOTE FOR, WHERE I CAN GO, AND ON AND ON.
THERE IS A SAYING OUT THERE THAT GOES SOMETHING LIKE "NEVER LET ANYONE DULL YOUR SPARKLE". MINE HAS NOT ONLY DULLED, IT HAS TOTALLY DISAPPEARED.

SO IT IS UP TO ME TO FIND MY SPARKLE AGAIN. AND WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO FIND IT? KIDS! THE PROBLEM BEING, I HAVE NO CAR AND NO WAY TO GET TO WHERE I WANT TO GO. SO I AM SEEKING A NEW CHURCH WHERE THEY CAN PROVIDE ME WITH TRANSPORTATION. KIDS OF ALL AGES, ARE A HOOT.

THE YOUNGEST OF THEM ARE SO PURE AND INNOCENT IN THEIR DISCOVERY OF LIFE. IT IS UNSURPASSED JOY TO SPEND TIME WITH THEM AND JUST BE SILLY. BUT MY ALL TIME FAVORITES ARE TEENAGERS. EVEN WHEN MY OWN WERE THAT AGE, IT WAS MY FAVORITE TIME WITH THEM. WHEN IS THE LAST TIME THAT YOU ACTUALLY SAT DOWN AND TALKED WITH KIDS THAT AGE? THEY HAVE AMAZING MINDS AND SOME VERY REAL OPINIONS THAT ARE NEVER VOCALIZED TO THEIR OWN PARENTS BECAUSE ARE TOO BUSY WITH THEIR OWN LIVES TO REALLY ASK.

AND FUNNY! TEENAGERS ARE NOT AFRAID TO BE GOOFY! I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE GEEKS VERSUS THE COOL KIDS. I AM JUST TALKING ABOUT KIDS GETTING INTO THE JOY OF LIFE. THE KIDS THAT WORK IN THE VARIOUS RETIREMENT CENTERS IN THIS CITY ( AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM) WILL DO ANYTHING THEY CAN TO GET THE OLDER FOLKS TO SMILE OR LAUGH OUT LOUD. THEY WILL WORK THEIR HIND ENDS OFF TO TRY TO MAKE THINGS EASIER FOR THEM. OF COURSE THAT IS NOT ALL OF THEM, BUT FOR THE MOST PART, IT IS THE MAJORITY. THEY DRESS UP SILLY FOR THE HOLIDAYS AND OFTEN BRING IN FRIENDS TO ENTERTAIN THEM WITH THEIR SMALL SINGING GROUPS OR EVEN THEIR HOME GROWN ROCK BANDS. YOU HAVE A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE IN AN OLD FOLKS HOME AND, SINCE YOU WORK FOR FREE, THEY WILL SIT THERE AND THINK YOU ARE WONDERFUL JUST BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU PERSONALLY.

TEENAGERS ARE A TRUE GIFT. THEY ALL CALL ME BY MY FIRST NAME AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT. MRS. SO AND SO IS MY MOTHER-IN-LAW; NOT ME. I CAN BE TOTALLY SILLY WITH THEM, BUT I ALSO LISTEN TO THEM AND AS A RESULT, THEY HAVE
BEFRIENDED ME. NOIW, I HAVE NOT SEEN THEM FOR OVER 9 MONTHS. THEY ASK AFTER ME, BUT THEY ARE TOLD THAT I AM TOO BUSY. I THINK THEIR PARENTS WOULD FIND IT STRANGE IF I WERE TO CALL THEM.

SO I SHALL BUY MYSELF A BUS PASS AND GET MYSELF OVER TO VISIT THE KIDS. PERHAPS I COULD VOLUNTEER TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS A SITTING-DOWN JOB, IN ONE OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS. I USED TO DO TONS OF VOLUNTEER WORK IN MY OLD CHURCH, BUT AM NO LONGER ALLOWED TO DO THAT THERE. A STORY FOR A DIFFERENT DAY.

TEENAGERS REALLY DO NOT THINK OF US AS STUPID, SENILE OLD PEOPLE. MANY OF THEM LOOK AT US AS A VERITABLE STOREHOUSE OF KNOWLEDGE TO BE TAPPED INTO AND REVERED. AND MANY WILL ASK US OF STORIES OF THE "OLD DAYS WHEN WE WERE TEENS". WHO WERE OUR "ROCK GODS"? WHAT SHOWS WERE ON TV? AND WHAT DID WE DO FOR ENTERTAINMENT ON A FRIDAY OR SATURDAY NIGHT? I LOVED THOSE TALKS WITH THE KIDS AND I MISS THAT TERRIBLY. BUT THEY ARE A FORGIVING LOT AND WILL BE GLAD TO SEE ME. NOW ... I JUST HAVE TO GET MYSELF THERE.

No one has told me what I can/can not do for many years. My hubby knows better than to even try.
I'm of the thought you are only as old as you feel.
Keep up the interesting blogs, I love em. emoticon

I agree I fell like a kid still too. The other day my sister said something about being 61. I thought to myself how can my sister be 61? She is younger than I am. Oh well. Another thing- kids are the best. How about volunteering at the school library. I used to do that and would sit and check out the books. I am sorry your sparkle had been completely dulled. Many days I feel like that too. I am trying desperately to kindle mine. Love you. emoticon

My mother died of breast cancer when she was 45 and I was 20 . I never thought I would live to be old(I"m 65). "Women in my family die young", I thought. I happen to be short and was regularly carded well into 40's; at one of my first job interviews after college, an interviewer started the interview with this question, "WHY DO YOU LOOK LIKE YOU'RE TWELVE YEARS OLD?" (I have no idea how I answered, but I will never forget the question). My point being that I completely agree that age is, largely, a state of mind. "Official Oldy" or "Officially Old" (because, I think, with medicare and all that - 65 is the age they seem to feel starts the "old" ball rolling) seems silly to me because I still feel fine. Poor health can hit at any age, and I do know it IS part of the aging process. That's why I joined SparkPeople, I want to stay healthy and fit for as long as I can.

I really identify with your ideas about humor and appreciation of people of all ages. It IS fun; we should all be"ageless" in this regard. I hang out with 5,6, and 7 year olds in my Girl Scout Troop for that reason. I will pray that you can get back with your teens, because I'm sure they miss you too. In the mean time, continue to have fun with it! It's the only "Old Age" we get and many people aren't that lucky!
