Why the Spark Decision? Day 19

Monday, October 15, 2012

Why did I make the Spark decision? This refers to a conversation with a dear friend that made the decision to get the gastric sleeve. I have a friend that under went that procedure last month on the sixth. When my husband heard the discussion about it he asked me if I would ever consider it. There was a time prior to my last weight loss 4 years ago which I did on my own that I did consider it. But once I realized that I could lose weight without such a thing no I didn't consider it. Yet I want to share a conversation here now. She said she wanted to do this to get healthy because she didn't want to gain weight again. I said so what have you done to look at your relationship with food that will make this about health and not weight? She said nothing at all just looked at me like I was crazy. I realized then she wasn't really handling the problem just the symptoms. I had made a decision already to explore the root cause of my problem. See when people look at me they see the weight and think that must be the problem. No it is just a symptoms. The problem is what led me here to this weight. So many times the medical industry treats the symptom and not the problem. Example little Johnny loves playing with matches and starts a fire. Everyone thinks okay lets keep him away from matches. Why not find out why he loves matches or is it the fire he loves? So people think we that are obese eat because we love it. Many times it has nothing to do with the food but what is bothering us that we would use something that is naturally good for our bodies and then make it the weapon to kill ourselves. I spoke to my friend last week and she says to me that she has come to realize there is another side to this thing other that than the operation and mental and emotional side imagine that. I told her now would be a good time for her to check out Sparkpeople.com

I think you gave your friend really good advice. WLS is not the holy grail--a lot of people who undergo it regain everything they lost, and some die because of that. Treatment of the underlying problem is essential. Good job.
