Whey Protein smoothies as a meal replacement yes or no?

Saturday, October 13, 2012

I am wanting to change up my breakfast and yet get the protein i need after my morning work out. I have already been coming up with some smoothie ideas. Is this a good idea or not? I have heard that whey protein will jump start your weight loss and metabolism. I would like to use water instead of milk in my recipe to save on calories. Add some frozen fruit, water, powder whey protein and ice and blend away, this way i get some water, fruit and protein in. Any input and recipes would be greatly appreciated.

I love protein smoothies for breakfast. I've never used whey powder though. My favorite is called Banana Split Power Smoothie. 1/2 Cup Frozen Unsweetened Strawberies, 3/4 Cup fresh fozen pineapple, a small banana, 1/2 cup cottage cheese & 1/2 Cup Plain Fat Free yogurt (the actual recipe calls for fat free milk or soy milk but the yogurt makes it thicker and I think it just tastes better). Makes about 2 cups for 256 calories. Comes out really thick & creamy with 20 grams of protein!

Having a fruit smoothie...with a protein supplement added...is good start to the day. It needs to be only a few times a week though...use other fruit, vegetables and protein combination on the other days.
I add a little greens to my smoothies...in a Magic bullet...like spinach, which blends well without affecting the taste. A quick smoothie for me is too add:
    3 frozen strawberries
    2-3 slices of frozen peaches
    2-3 frozen cherries
1/2 - 3/4 cup of spinach leaves (loosely)
    1/2 cup coconut juice
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (I am lactose sensitive)
    1 tsp. lemon zest
    juice from 1/2 lemon
    Blend and enjoy...
