I haven't really been out to eat since I started SP. I want to go out but, I have been afraid of the fat/calorie bomb choices.
Sparkpeople has given me knowledge. And the internet is a wonderful tool.
Obviously, not all restaurants have nutrition info online. The major chains do, though.
I checked out Applebee's, Red Lobster and Joe's Crab Shack because they are all local.
Joe's Crab Shack: OMG! I had to do a separate search for nutrition info because it is not available from their menu site. No wonder. This is a restaurant guaranteed to expand the waistline. I figured the steamer pots wouldn't be horrible:fish, potatoes, corn and flavorings, right? Wrong! They must inject lard or something directly into the food. We are talking single-serving calorie counts of 1100-1300 calories and fat counts in the 70's. I don't care how cute their commercials are, they are permanently off my list of places to eat. There was nothing safe on that menu.
Applebee's: Some reasonable choices. Not too many however. The safest menu items are labeled Weight Watchers. The salads (all of them) have a significant amount of fat even before dressing. The Tuscan Bean Soup with Chicken (featured in today's DailySpark) is also a good choice.
Red Lobster: WooHoo! Lots of choices, mostly shrimp, lobster and crab. However, there are daily fish specials, appetizers, salad, and soup choices. I could have shrimp cocktail as an appetizer, a cup of manhattan clam chowder, grilled shrimp &snow crab with broccoli on the side. Heck, I could even add a salad to that without getting too crazy (the dressing isn't too bad, but it isn't great either.) Or, if I skipped the salad I could eat one of those (and only one) biscuits with the soup.
I already told DH. We are going out for an early dinner tomorrow.
