The good news: We are all fine! The bad news: Dealing with a house fire.

Friday, October 12, 2012

For those Sparkers who are also my Facebook friend, this is just a copy of what I posted on FB. Thanks for checking up on me. :-)

So, here's what's new in my and Jack's lives the past couple days: Small fire at our house. We are fine and all pets fine too. Small amount of damage to the house. But, we have no electricity, no landline phone, no internet, no cable, and likely won't have any back until Tuesday at the earliest. :-(

Next to the no electricity, the worst thing is the smell of smoke and burned/melted vinyl siding. It permeates the house, including clothes of course. They are bringing some fabulous ozone machines next week, which are supposed to suck out or somehow get rid of most of the bad odors. I'm looking for ward to that!

All in all, we are very very lucky. Some nearby construction workers saw the smoke & flames fast and called 911, fire dept arrived quickly (but Jack and the workers had fire out already). Everyone is fine!!! The insurance co. is being great! The local electric co. was very responsive (not their fault the electric won't be back on quicker), contractor was very quick to respond, neighbor brought us coffee this morning (love them!!!), pets are still a little unsettled but doing fine. Insurance gave us temp housing. I cannot take the smell in the house so I'm staying at the hotel nights until that is cleaned up. Jack can tolerate the smell so he is is staying at home with the critters; he does not want to uproot them by bringing them to the hotel. That may change if he freezes in the house tonight. We have lots to be thankful for and I can't thank all these people enough.

That about sums it up. I hope your weekend is not as eventful as ours has started.

With all this going on, I will be online a bit less than usual. I'll catch up with you all when things calm down on this end.

Take care and remember to give thanks for all your blessings. I am certainly doing that.

I'm sorry this happened to your family, and I'm glad the damage wasn't worse. Isn't it amazing how people pull together when something like this happens? Glad you have a lot of support. I hope things get as back to normal as possible sooner than later. :)

It would seem there is nothing like a tragedy. near tragedy to guide a person's focus to the positive...that is that you and your pet's are ok. I know that this is not easy but you have also had the opportunity to see the goodness of your neighbors and to find out that your insurance has been helpful...not that you wanted to have to find that out. I hope that all gets cleared up quickly for you and of course, I suppose you could rent a generator to help keep the house warm enough for your pets and make it possible for your husband to do some of the necessary things at the house.

If having friends wishing well for you is of any benefit...you have it covered!

Having a fire at your home must have been a frightening experience ! I'm glad that someone saw in time so that the fire department could contain it. I'm sure it must be a relief that everyone is okay and the house had minor damage.

You may want to bring over some cookies or treats for those construction workers. It was great that they helped out a neighbor.

Sounds like it could have been much worse. You are very lucky. Sorry for your ordeal.

Well talk about perspective.. I am sitting in a hotel room only 2 hours away from my home and I've been unhappy about the place for all of it's defects, but if I was staying here because I had no power at home (and I have had to do that before with storm damage) then I would just be grateful for the heat.

    Good luck with your repairs.

Sorry to hear your news. Glad you and the rest are all okay. Glad there is not too much damage, but this is still scary stuff, so very upsetting for all of you. I hope you get things all put back together soon so you can get back home and all be together again. I always feel sorry for the pets (and small children) because they really don't understand what has happened and there is just no way to tell them that things will be okay.

So sorry you are going through this, but glad it wasn't any worse!

Hang in there, it will improve!

(We had a brush fire outside the house once, took several trucks to put it out, and the house smelled of smoke for weeks - I had to sleep sitting up for a week or so - so stay at the hotel until the smell is gone for YOU. Some of us just have more sensitive nasal passages.)
