Memories of Costumes Past

Thursday, October 11, 2012

I know not everyone celebrates Halloween but I got to thinking about the costumes I have worn in the past. I am sure some of them are going to give away my age a bit. So I will own my 38 years right now so you all dont have to guess at that.

6 Princess Lea (Star Wars)

7 Annie

8 Holly Hobby

11 Baby New Year (yes clothe diaper and all best friend went as father time, that was a cold wet year too)

Those are just a few of the more memorable ones. So what were some of yours, do you still like to dress up as an adult?

My mom was in an orchestra and had a black dress that fit me as a long dress so I went as a witch a lot of years. I remember asking my mom if I could go as someone pretty instead of a witch. My uncle had a Japanese robe that fit me and I put my hair up in a bun. It was a pretty pink with a beautiful design on it. I was happy to wear a pretty costume. As an adult I had pj's that were the footie kind that zipped up like a baby's so I went as a baby with a big teddy bear. That was fun.

I don't remember mine much except that I dressed as a cigarette girl in junior high. LOL. My best friend and I dressed the same. Her mom, a school teacher, suggested the costumes. LOL.

As an adult I am either Morticia, a witch, or a pirate.

I think that I was Holly Hobby one year too!

My mom was super creative with my costumes. One year she dressed me up as a black widow spider. She took a snowman costume pattern, cut it out of black taffeta, attached tubes for the arms, and affixed a red hourglass to the front. Another year I was a head on a platter. Took a box, cut a hole in it, set the "table"- complete with cups of "blood" and plates of spiders.

My favorite costume growing up was Raggedy Ann - my cousin would go as Raggedy Andy since she had the short hair emoticon We did that 3 or 4 years. It was so much fun painting our faces and spray painting our hair!! I went as a princess a few times, and once I dressed up as the Fairy Godmother to my little sister's Cinderella and my middle sister dressed up as one of the mice.

As a side note, I had a metal Holly Hobby lunch box one year for school emoticon

I didn't get to go as a kid and I think that made it pretty much required fun ever since I turned 18 lol. Now I get to go trick-or-treating with our kids and it's a total blast. We get dressed up from time to time. This year I am going as cannon fodder for our little Daryl Dixon... zombie for the killin. That should be messy and fun.

BTW... Holly Hobby! lol Sorry, had to shout it. My sister still has her little Holly Hobby doll and you don't hear much about her anymore. Good times!

Some of the adult costumes I did were Egyptian priestess, Renaissance Lady, Pirates and Zombies before.

I had a witches costume. It was my mother's old wool long black skirt, a black sweater, a black cape a lady in our church sewed for me and it had a pointed hem (I still hav it) and I had this really cool black witches hat that was made of some strong material and of course the tip was bent. My dad bought a mop head - the string kind that janitors use on warehouse or school floors - it was new so it made a great, but heavy, wig and we sewed some ribbon under neight it so I could tie it behind my head instead of under the chin and it stayed on. Then we found this really neat rubber mask of an ugly witches face with missing teeth and an ugly wart on her nose. That was so hot (meaning temperature hot) that I had to take it off as the sweat would roll down into my eyes. After that we figured out ways to make my face look like a witch with makeup. Anyway, I remember going to a Halloween Party and there was a costume contest that I won first prize for.

The mask got lost that Halloween night and I don't know what happened to all the rest of it, except I do have the cape.

When I became a teen, my parents said we were too old to go out and trick-or-treat. So I gave away the treats and dressed as a witch and I'd open the door slowly so as to creat the scare effect. My brother went out to protect the little kids from the bullies. I always thought that was pretty cool.

So thanks for draggin up some memories and I'll be asking that on the QOTD for sure. emoticon

I was one of the ugly step-sisters two years ago. This year I'll be a dead beauty queen.

I have never dressed up on Halloween or went out Trick or Treating.

It sounds like you had some pretty good memories of yours.
