I've turned a corner reading labels

Thursday, October 11, 2012

It's fall, and I DO love my hot chocolate. So when we had a 30 degree drop in temperature this weekend, I headed to the store for some hot chocolate mix. Notice I said "hot chocolate", not "cocoa".
Well, thanks to the SP LIFESTYLE, the first thing I did was read the label.
First ingredient on hot chocolate mix? Sugar.
Calories - too high.
Fat - too high
Carbs - we won't even go there. (4 tsp sugar)
So I put the different brands back on the shelf, came home, and made my usual hot herbal tea with no sugar.
Yes, my life has changed. For the better!

I have a weird food allergy so I have become a devoted label reader. And it is constantly amazing me what is really in food....

I bought some new teas last year on my birthday, and threw away all the ancient ones hanging around in the pantry- I decided life is too short to drink bad tea. I have really enjoyed those new teas since. I guess my point is if we make our healthy choices seem like pampering it makes it more enjoyable.

I like certain chai teas if I want a little more flavor. Trader Joe's has a Ruby Red Chai that I really like. It contains rooibos from South Africa, which has health benefits and no caffeine. Plus I hear some of the flavored stevias are very nice in beverages.

Herbal Tea is great = love green tea!!!
BUT == when I want Hot Chocolate --- nothing else will do. Some options: skim milk + a squirt of lite chocolate syrup heated in the microwave; sugar-free hot chocolate (I don't mind occasional artificial sweetener); a cup of hot coffee or decaf, sweetened and a spoonful of cocoa. All relatively harmless, loaded with calcium & protein = and satisfies my need for chocolate!!!

AWESOME! The kids and I will still buy some on the rare occasion as a treat, but we don't keep it in the house, either! Love hot herbal tea! Good Earth's caffeine free sweet & spicy for hubby and I, and the kids love anything with raspberry in it!
