My Success Story

Back in 2008 - shortly after I joined spark people I found out that I have CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease). I was told I was in stage 3 Kidney failure - it sounds scarier than it is.. really! But - You have to take care of your body or you can find yourself in Stage 4 - which then is VERY scary! Stage 4 CKD means you are looking at dialysis or the beginning of the transplant process.
While some CHOOSE to do nothing - I CHOSE to be proactive... I did research on CKD. Just getting my feet wet on Spark - was the icing on the cake for me! I learned how being inactive and eating unhealthy impacts health in general. Well - with CKD everything I had just learned to eat - became upside down or backwards.
The CKD diet cannot include things like wheat, some veggies like tomatoes which are a power food for normal people - are toxic for CKD patients. Raspberries are another power food I have to avoid!
At any rate - learning how to adjust my diet was challenging and still is - in some ways. I have to limit my phosphorus, sodium, potassium and up my Vitamin D to 10000 IU Daily.
So here I am - four years later and my readings are now almost Stage ONE!!! I still have CKD. I am still stage 3. My Kidneys are functioning at a very VERY good level for being diseased!
The other most important part of maintaining this disease is EXERCISE. Most of my friends know I have a bad ankle and I move as much as my ankle allows.. I do try to work out 3-4 days a week, 30 - 60 minutes is my goal. (lately I am back in PT so I can get back to it!)
My Creatinine is .88 and my GFR is between 70-75.
If you do not know these two numbers - please get them checked! Most do not know they have CKD until late stage kidney failure.
Some even die from complications from CKD because they did not know that they have it.
I have not lost a huge amount of weight since joining Spark - my weight has gone up and down - as I have dealt with minor and major health issues - but I have left SIX specialists by gaining health. I have maintained my CKD by gaining health. This is my success story!
