Make A Difference Day is America's largest annual day of volunteering.
Saturday, October 27, 2012.
Millions of us will help our communities.
We will help our neighbor hood.
We will better our environment.

To me interacting with people in need is much more than a monetary donation.
You can feel their need. These are people who have been written off. You realize that sometimes the difference between somebody picking the right path in life vs the wrong path comes down to someone else cares, that you aren't in it alone. It can matter so much. And it can make your own problems at work, or home seem small and manageable.
Sometimes it's hard stepping outside yourself when you have so much on your shoulders.
You have to get the kids to school , pick them up. You have to cook dinner, You have bills to pay. You have stuff going on and your load is heavy. You might be trying to manage in a single parent home or even with the two of you both working it's hard. But you know what? Someone else's load is heavier. Someone needs you right now. And sometimes the way to lighten your load is to try to lighten someone else.
Sometimes it's as simple as asking an elderly neighbor if they need to go to the store. Or do they need you to pick up something for them. Maybe they can't manage their lawn. The older kids or the family can get together and fix it.
Maybe its a run down lot in the neighbor hood. You can gather a bunch of neighbors to clean it up.
The same goes for a local small neighborhood park. The cities are cutting back on keeping parks up, lack of funds. Take on a clean up park or play ground .
When you go out walking , take a plastic bag with you, pick up tossed fast food containers, cans. You would be surprised how much trash is in a mile radius of your home. I take one with me every morning. Here in Oregon we have a bottle law, each can or bottle is worth 5 cents . I some times make a dollar a day on my walk.
If you are a stay at home retired women maybe you have a over worked younger mothers on your block. Volunteer to sit for her , give her some time to get out by herself. They might like a volunteer Grandmother.
Give to the local food bank. If you bought just one extra can a month in a year you would have a dozen cans of food and you would not feel the cost of giving.
Don't forget the Dollar Stores. Great place to pick up bathroom tissue and cleaning supplies. Something that Food Stamps won't buy and everyone has to have. I always give these items to the food banks.
You can also donate to the missions and shelters directly.
Your time is valuable and so needed.
The Red Cross, where I give time is always looking for volunteers.
Meals on wheels can use help. Senior centers can use volunteers. Even retirement home sometimes can have people come in and do exercises, crafts.
Volunteer for the local hospital.
Don't forget our service men and women. I am volunteering to pack and wrap packages to send off for Xmas to ones serving in Afghanistan . We have men and women serving in far countries all over the world. A package with American products, some home made good is so approximated at Xmas. Some of the brave young people serving have no family so step in adopt a service person for the holidays. You an also open up your home for the holiday dinner to a person with no family. Sometimes we do this with the collage students living too far from their country to go home.
Right after Xmas is a good time to pick up Xmas decorations and wrapping paper for the next years donations. Our family does that, plus we pick up our toys to donate this year during the after Xmas sales . Through out the year if I see something on sale, I buy it, That way I am not putting out so much money at one time. I hardly miss it that way.
This are just a few of my ideas. I am sure you have some of your own. To get more ideas see below.

On Make A Difference Day, October 27, I know you can find just one hour to reach out and help someone or do something that betters the planet we live on.
What you get back is immeasurable.
More important I hope you get hooked on community service that day. I'd love that one day a year to become once a month, or once a week. That would really make a difference.
Peace and Love

Great blog, Tisha! The women at the shelter did another 5k on Saturday. Even though it was pouring down rain, they did the whole distance and had a great time. While they were walking, I went and got them hot cocoa and coffee for when they were done. It was a very happy day. They loved having fun together. Big win!

I love this blog. We have a beautiful store in the neighboring community that has everything displayed like a department store. I tell others if they have clothes that are in very good condition to bring them to me & then I take them to the store.Anyone can go there for clothing. Then right next door is the food store fully stocked, for those in need & there are many.Another thing to do is visiting the nursing homes. There are so many many things to do as a volunteer. We have a gentleman in the area ,that goes out every day with his bike & has 2 large baskets on the side.He had open heart surgery & his Doctor said he must walk every day He started in June & only missed 2 days since June due to severe rain. He drives his bike then stops with ( 2 ) 33 gallon trash bags & picks up litter along the road, he goes in different directions & drives his bike quite away from his home. I think if we all get involved with helping out we feel better in the end . Thank you for your great blog

    Such a beautiful important message!
And great ideas that enable us to keep costs down!
My favourite thing is to buy stuffed animals and think of the comfort & joy
it will give children through the year! And you are right, buying on sale after Christmas for next year is great...just pick up the totes that go on sale after Christmas to store them so they
    stay dust free and together!
    Love you, Tisha!

I never knew there was a special day - and somehow the volunteer jobs just show up on their own. It is a good blog.

Great information as you are well informed about this Special Volunteer Day. I've never heard of it before? I need to think this over and register as I'm sure there is some way I can help. Thank you Tisha as otherwise I'd think it was just another day. Take Care.

Really? Why does this get less publicity than Talk Like A Pirate day??? October 27 is the day my little darling rides in the local area Special Olympics horse show. Wonderful people and volunteers making a difference in the lives of our children and families abound at this event :) Perhaps I can do something for them for all they do for my girl! emoticon
