SEASONS CHANGE ....

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

I DON'T THINK THERE IS A PERSON ALIVE THAT HASN'T GONE THROUGH SOME KIND OF MAJOR CHANGE IN THEIR LIVES. IF YOU HAVEN'T, YOU PROBABLY LIVE IN A HOME FOR THE TERMINALLY STRANGE. I HAVE MANY FRIENDS THERE - THEY KNOW ME WELL. BUT IT'S THE CHANGES THAT ARE THRUST UPON US THAT EITHER MAKE US OR BREAK US. THERE IS SOME KIND OF SAYING THAT GOES, "THAT WHICH DOESN'T KILL YOU, MAKES YOU STRONGER". AT THIS POINT, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO BENCH PRESS A BUICK!

BUT IT CAN ALSO BE THOSE VERY CHANGES THAT DETERMINE THE COURSE OF OUR FUTURE LIVES. WE MAY NOT HAVE HAD ANY CHOICE IN THE THINGS THAT CHANGED US, BUT WE DO HAVE A CHOICE IN HOW WE WILL RE-ACT TO THEM. SOME OF US LOSE OUR MINDS COMPLETELY. LIKE I SAID, THEY KNOW ME WELL AT "THE HOME". YUCK YUCK.

STILL, AT 65 YEARS OLD, IT IS NOT EASY TO HAVE TO LOOK BACK OVER YOUR LIFE AND SAY SOMETHING LIKE, "THIS IS NOT HOW I WANTED IT TO TURN OUT!" REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE KIDS AND COULDN'T WAIT TO BE TEENAGERS, AND THEN TO DRIVE, AND THEN TO BE "GROWN-UPS"? MY FOLKS USED TO LAUGH AT ME AND SAY,"TRUST ME HONEY. IT ISN'T ALL IT'S CRACKED UP TO BE."

I HAD VISIONS OF BEING A BRILLIANT INTERNATIONAL BUSINESSWOMEN (HIGHLY FROWNED ON IN THOSE DAYS) I WOULD TRAVEL THE WORLD, DAZZLE THE MEN WITH WHOM I WORKED, WITH MY INTELLIGENCE, AND HAVE MY FACE ON TEH COVER OF TIME MAGAZINE.

HA! IT IS MORE TRUE TO SAY THAT I FIGHT TO WALK IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION (GORILLA STYLE IS HARD ON THE BACK), MUST USE A WALKER WHEREVER I GO, SIT ON MY HIND PARTS IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER MUCH OF THE DAY. AND THE TRAVEL? I WOULD HAVE TO BOOK TWO SEATS AND FLY MEDICAL CLASS. HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DO THE BUSINESS THING SINCE 1998 EITHER. AND THE MAGAZINE COVER WOULD MOST LIKELY BE FOR "SENILITY IS US".

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS ACTUALLY A SENIORS VERSION OF "JEOPARDY" THAT YOU CAN PLAY ON YOUR COMPUTER JUST TO KEEP YOUR MIND SHARP? WELL, MY MIND IS SO SHARP I COULD HURT MYSELF ON IT, BUT MY BODY IS SHOT! AND YES! MUCH OF THAT IS MY OWN FAULT. I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BOARD THE PITY TRAIN AND SPENT MANY YEARS CRYING BUCKETS OF TEARS OVER THE PITIFUL TURN OF EVENTS THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.

BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? IT DOESN'T HAVE TO STAY THAT WAY! THERE IS NO AGE LIMIT ON A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN SHARE OF PROBLEMS. THEY REALLY, REALLY, DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOURS. YES, WE ARE HERE TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER, BUT A CONSTANT WHINER IS A MAJOR DOWNER. I DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO THINK OF ME THAT WAY! I WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE PEOPLE REMEMBER ME AS THAT GOOFY LADY DOWN THE ROAD THAT REALLY NEVER GREW UP. "SHE ALWAYS MADE ME SMILE" WOULD BE MY FAVORITE LEGACY.

AND YES. I DO LOOK A LOT LIKE THIS SEMI-NAKED ANGEL ON MY PAGE. JUST ADD ABOUT 100 POUNDS, REMOVE THE BELLY BUTTON RING, COLOR THE HAIR GRAY, AND CHOP ABOUT A FOOT OFF THOSE LONG LEGS. AND THERE YOU HAVE IT. A SELF-PORTRAIT! RIGHT! SO NOT TRUE!

I'm also 65 and can relate to much that you say here. SparkPeople is a good place for us to be, I think. This "goal setting" stuff really works - along with all the wonderful Spark Friend support, that is. I'm "officially" old here because I think it's funny - a riot! I don't feel "old", even thought I, some how, look like my mother! Since I've been on Spark I've set and met some health goals and I'm slowly loosing weight. I think it's the health thing that's going to get us from our 60's to our 80's or 90's. Spark on and have fun!

emoticon You are very right ~ it's not too late... From a 66 year old who is still trying to find her way (and will one day succeed)! My husband likes to say we are still trying to figure out what we will be when we grow up! emoticon Stay positive!
