What do you do when you do hurt yourself exercising?

Tuesday, October 09, 2012

I was so proud of myself to do Coach Nicole's 7 minute exercise band routine. The first exercise, where you raise the band over your head, she warns you just to go as high as you can comfortably. Well, I overdid it, and now I have a little pain in my chest, not a big one, but enough to make me swear off exercise!!! I mean, any little excuse, right???

Start any exercise program with a warm up. Jog in place for 5 minutes, or take a short walk through your neighborhood first. Then get into the exercise routine. I have to work around chronic injuries that are 4 years old and can never be repaired: one knee and one shoulder. Vingram is right - work around the injuries, but don't stop moving.

Here's hoping you're feeling better soon!

Straining something so that it feels hurt once the workout stops means you need to rest. That's a good excuse, not a bad excuse, for a break.

Remember RICE - rest, ice, compression, elevation. Give yourself a bit of a break and skip the that type of routine for another couple of days.

Depending on where you feel the strain, you could still do some light exercise like going for a walk, as long as you don't feel further strain either from arm movement or from taking deep breaths.

Let that part rest. Exercise the rest. emoticon
