1200 Calories Before Lunch...

Monday, October 08, 2012

One of the great things about hiking is that you get to eat - a lot!

A couple of turkey and cheese sandwiches (with mayo!), hardboiled egg, couple of apples, grapes, trail mix. Gotta keep that fuel coming.
I avoid granola bars and other such items. It's just candy in disguise... too much sugar for sure.

Yesterday's hike took me past a pretty little waterfall

through a camp in the woods

sunshine overhead (but very comfortable temps)

to our highest point at 4115'

We did 15 miles, gained 3100' and were back by 12:30. Started at 7:00, took a couple of snack breaks. Not a bad workout for a Sunday morning.

I think that I haven't been eating enough on my hikes, and definitely not the right foods! I have been eating less than what you posted and taking longer to finish my hikes. Thanks for posting what you ate because it's really helping me! I've got less than one month before my big hike, if I can make it!

WOW, you did good time for such a hike (last year I did an easy mountain in the rockies, Twin Sisters, only 7 miles and about 2400' elevation gain. And it took us just as long. emoticon
I find that when I'm on the trail I definately eat less. I also stay away from granola bars. My favorite trail food is a FEW salted almonds.

You're lucky to live where you can hike like that. I enjoy hiking. Where I live it's flat and extremely hot and buggy most of the year. On the plus side, we live near the ocean.
