An addict.

Monday, October 08, 2012

Now, don't let the headline fool you. This isn't as alarming as it seems. I have an addiction but it's not as bad as others-- I love Diet Coke. Typically, I drink about 5-6 glasses/bottles/cans a day. That's a lot of caffeine and artificial sweetener. It has gotten to the point where I'm so dehydrated because I'm just not drinking enough water and instead am consuming sugar-- which dehydrates people (artificial or not).

So, I want to quit drinking it. My plan? Carry around water. If I have water to drink, I'll be more likely to choose it over Diet Coke because it's already here. I won't have to spend money or go through the inconvenience of purchasing it. It's been two days and I haven't had a whole lot. I had some at dinner yesterday and then at lunch today. I like the way that this is going.

So, here's to no more Diet Coke. Or, at the very least, to just one or two servings a day. That seems like something that I can do. It seems plausible... that is, until I have a headache and an exam to study for.

I switched my addiction from Mountain Dew to Sprite to Diet Sprite then to Crystal Lite. All of these left me dying of thirst. I forced myself to drink nothing but water for two days straight and noticed how terrible the bloat in my stomach was because I went down a pant size in puffiness. I've since switched over to water with cucumber slices or kiwi slices. Something with flavor. I still can't bring myself to drink plain straight water. Take cutting down your caffeine with baby steps because it can lead to the WORST headaches ever.

I too love Diet Coke. I use to drink a good 8-9 cans a day. I have wiened myself down to 3 a day. I tried to stop it all together and within 2 hours of getting up I stopped to get one. I have realized that reducing is a good alternative when you can not quit. I keep a water bottle with me all day on my desk. This helps a lot.

Do yourself a favor and switch to Coke Zero while you wean yourself off Coke. . has the same taste with none of the consequences as you switch to a more healthy beverage like water.
