a quick update

Sunday, October 07, 2012

if you've been following my status updates, you know i haven't been completely lax about keeping y'all posted on how i'm doing. but i thought i'd post a quick thing here because it's been a long time.

so i've been passively watching my sodium for about a month now. for the past 2 weeks the scale has shown that i've gained some weight, even though my calories are pretty much in order (give or take a day). so i'm assuming it's water weight from either not drinking enough water or eating way too much salt, or both.

so i tried to watch my sodium a bit more closely than before. but all this past week i've gone over my allotted amount. so then i worry about it, and i end up eating more. add this to the fact that i have an exam on wednesday, and the usual pattern of eating random things that i wouldn't normally eat at hours when i wouldn't normally eat them persists.

interestingly enough, it seems like the less i think about sodium, the better off i am. i'm going to stop obsessing about salt and see what happens.

I am a salt lover, too.
Keep up the good work and don't let the scale defeat you!

I am struggling with salt because it is something I crave. Some people like sugar, I want pickles, chips and beef jerky. I think just creating an awareness of sodium intake is key to starting to make the change to lower it.

Best wishes with your exam!

clwaldro: my total calories consumed is under the limit pretty much every day, even though i'm eating more than usual (funny how that happens). it's the sodium that's been up to 500 mg over the limit. sorry if that wasn't clear. :P

i def need to invest in more veggies and healthier snacks. microwave popcorn is great, but fairly sodium rich--even the smart balance brand and the "healthy kind" is like that. it's hard because i can't drive and there's not a good grocery store within walking distance, so i'm usually relying on processed/packaged things that don't spoil. but these are just excuses. i'm about to go home for fall break at the end of this week, and i'm hitting the grocery store with my mom. i already warned her that i'll be looking for ways to stock my cabinet with the good stuff. :)

thanks for the support :D

I am sure the sodium has a little to do with the weight gain but somehow you need to get the total calories consumed under the limit on a daily basis. Have you tried the meal plan creator available on this site? Is the eating different due to the classes? My suggestion would be to get a big veggie tray for the late night snacking.
Best wishes in your journey to better health

I've been trying to work on my sodium intake also, but I keep going over my daily allowance. I have gotten better, but it's a work in process. Sodium is in everything. I rarely use salt, and I'm still struggling with it. So don't beat yourself up about it, because this sodium is a tricky little devil. Hang in there, things will get better. Good luck on your exam. emoticon
