North Cascades Weekend

Sunday, October 07, 2012

We headed over the lovely North Cascades Hwy Friday morning to get to the top of the highest road in WA and Slate Peak Lookout and do some hiking where the larch trees needles are turning golden before dropping. We explored the Pacific Crest Trail from a few places near Hart's Pass Road. It's so beautiful right now with the fall colors.

We stayed in the old west style town of Winthrop in a great room with a private deck with a view of mountains and a field that deer stay in at night.

Saturday we did a somewhat difficult, but only 5 miles, hike to Goat Peak Lookout then we made the long scenic drive home.

I didn't stick to my diet while we were gone but I didn't pig out either. Today I am back to it and getting my chores done and healthy food ready for the week.
I haven't had much time for Sparkpeople but am living healthier than I have in a long time.

    Great Pics - thanks.

Okay, lots of questions and comments, answer when you have time, please.

1. What is a Carin for?

2. Is that a stack of rocks to the right of the "step" on the Goat Peak Trail? Did you build it or was it already there?

3. Bear on bed is sweet.

4. I am glad I did not have to haul up the stack of wood (or even one piece of wood) on my back to the top of Goat Peak Lookout!

5. The pine martin was cute. He's a Trail Toll Taker and he was asking for his toll.

6. I think the picture of the overlook at Liberty Bell Mountain is where we were when we took the pictures of my friend looking like he was climbing a sheer cliff. You'll have to see my remarks previously. It was so foggy that day, that I barely got a picture of Liberty Bell Mountain when the fog opened for a couple of seconds. Another opportunity I happened to be lucky enough to catch.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Have a great one! emoticon

You went to Goat Peak too late. You missed meeting Lightning Bill. He's the staffer for the lookout in the summer and is quite a character. You have to go back!

Lovely area. Your hikes also include so much elevation change. I hope to hike parts of the Pacific Coast trail someday. Thanks for sharing and sounds like a wonderful weekend!

I'm very envious...I grew up in the little town of Mossyrock and although I live in a beautiful, but very different environment now, (Scottsdale, AZ) I always miss hiking in the glorious northwest. Your pictures were just great. Thanks for posting.
