Wandering Thoughts: How do you measure a banana?

Sunday, October 07, 2012

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Just curious about something...we went grocery shopping yesterday, which happens about once a week at this house. I always tell Richard to get the smallest bananas he can find (not those itty bitty 2-3 inch kind, but small). Then I got to thinking about measuring bananas and I wonder how you all measure them? I usually "eyeball" them and decide if it looks like a small vs. a medium vs. a large, but when bananas are tracked, it is according to inches. So, for example, an extra small banana is less than 6 inches.

But, where do you measure them and how? With a flexible tape measure along the outside bigger curve? Along the inside smaller curve? From the top to the bottom in a straight line? And, does anyone care? Maybe I'm the only one who eats them! LOL!!

Just curious about how you do it! I never noticed until today that there is an entry on the tracker for grams of banana. Maybe I'll weigh one and see how much it weighs just for kicks!

Have a great week, SparkFriends, with or without bananas! emoticon

I only use them in things so half a cup of smashed banana is half a cup LOL!

We never get the small ones, and I just eyeball whether it's large or medium. Usually they only carry large ones in the store where we shop. I don't get them often and only buy 3 or 4 at a time, as my DH doesn't eat them and they do go soft so quickly. But I enjoy bananas and like to get them every couple of weeks. But even a large banana is a lot better than a Snickers, which used to be my favorite snack, so I don't obsess over it.

Now why on earth would you measure a banana when you know you're just going to use it as a dipper for the hot chocolate!

I've been weighing foods like bananas long enough that I'm a pretty good guesser.

I eat them every day in my smoothie. I eyeball them and try to buy medium ones, when possible. But then on my plan, I don't count calories. I do use the tracker, but just use the calories to give me an idea of where I am. emoticon

Does it really matter? I'm with you, I just eyeball them. At least when you eat a banana you are not eating all those really fattening foods out there. Enjoy! emoticon

I used my nutrition scale and coded in a banana. If you use a ruler from end to end it comes pretty close to what the nutrition scale reads, so just measure with a straight ruler or use your gram measure on a peeled banana

OK, Jeannie... emoticon .. emoticon ah, seriously? Or not?

But when you think about it, how do you measure....and here's a thought. Say you use the grams...

With or without peel? Ha!

No one eats the peel but how are they measuring? You never know. I'm told that one medium banana weighs 126 grams on the Chiquita website. I'm guessing it's without the peel but.... emoticon

Glad I don't eat bananas...too much to think about. emoticon

Be sure to weigh it without the peel! No, seriously, I just estimate the length of the banana. I don't buy them regularly because DH doesn't like them if they start to get the least bit soft, and I am stuck with the remainder of them!

(I make banana bread out of them, after a while, really good!) emoticon

I spread my hand and use the space from the tip of my thumb to the tip of my baby finger to decide! Silly huh.

LOL!! Are you the only one? NO!! Let's see if I can come up with a way.........uum, how about pealing and then laying the fruit on the counter or a plate if you wish and straightening it. Now you can measure it with a ruler :)D :)D.
I don't know. Guess I am one that guesses or eyeballs the length. I eat one or two a day as I love them. I think by the end of the week, I should have the correct amount eaten!! Thanks for the fun!!

OMG Jeannie are you really serious or just "pulling our leg" on this $64,000 question?? I go by the inches personally but just by eyeballing them and like Lise if it's small I use the medium one to track as I'd rather not underestimate which I tend to do on some other fruit. I love bananas and I think they've gotten a bum rap. . .Being diabetic I'm almost afraid to eat them and have cut down and don't have them nearly as often but love them and they are full of potassium which we all need. I can hardly believe it but I have friends and family that don't even like them--imagine that--LOL!

Love You,

Jill

I've always been told a "good sized" (now that's a very personal observation) banana counts as 2 fruits. So if I eat a large one, straight up, from the peal, I enter it as 2 fruits on my tracker. If I share one, in a fruit salad, with the hubby, that's one fruit. But I think weighing it and checking the grams is a very good idea and I too, would love to know your results emoticon emoticon I love my food scale emoticon

LOL, LET ME KNOW BECAUSE I EAT THEM EVERYDAY AND I USE THE TRACKER. I USE THE TRACKER AND MOST OF THE TIMES, I WOULD REGISTER MEDIUM EVEN IF I BUY THE SMALLER ONES UP THERE. I DO THE SAME WITH APPLES.

YOU HAVE AN INTERESTING POINT THERE SHERLOCK, I CANT WAIT TO SEE YOUR RESULTS.
