Getting ready to drive 6 hours or so to Autism Academy

I am now packed and almost ready to go. I am excited about this trip and looking forward to it. I love getting together with those who do much the same job I do. What is really fun is meeting the teachers who have had the students I now have but who had them in the past. Our county has a residential treatment facility (only one of its kind in the state) where kids with severe behavior problems and intellectual challenges are treated and those kids who are in that facility are in the classrooms in our schools. So, I once had a student whose parent said at an IEP meeting - "The other school didn't suspend him and he BROKE THE TEACHERS ARM once and her LEG another time." GEE, doesn't THAT sound encouraging for ME - a first year special ed teacher to hear. Time has passed and I have learned a LOT but some of my students are still the same ones who have been totally out of control and dangerous that they have been placed in a residential facility because of their extreme behaviors. Meeting their teachers is exciting and fun because we are OFTEN talking about totally different students. The other group of teachers I love to meet are those who NOW have students I have had in the past who have been discharged and gone back to their home schools. What a treat to meet THOSE teachers and talk about how the kids are NOW doing. Since I love my kids and care what happens to them, this is one of my favorite parts of the job.
I have packed my snack bag for in the car - several bottles of water, some healthy fruit and some protein and fiber bars. I also have a sandwich packed for lunch and am just about ready to go. I still have to shower but I should be on the road by 10:00 or 10:30. Have a great day all. I will probably check in later if the wi-fi works at the conference center otherwise, I will check in when I get home LATE Tuesday night or if it is too late, then on Wednesday some time.
