I can lift weights again! ...but I lost a lot of muscle.

Sunday, October 07, 2012

That pretty much sums it up. I tried lifting weights for the first time since my surgery, and it basically went fine. The strain didn't make my incision sore or anything. The only problem is that I've lost what seems to me to be a whole lot of strength. Our little gym here at the apartment complex has one of those resistance machine thingies with a couple stations where you can attach various pulleys and bars and whatnot, so I don't know exactly what the numbers on the weights translate to. I'm assuming that when it says "8" it means 80 pounds, but I really have no idea.

So for example, I'm used to lifting at "8" on many of the exercises, but today I was really struggling with the weight set to "7". Like, REALLY struggling. I guess it's not a huuuuuge drop in strength, but it was kind of depressing. And I needed to rest more between sets and between different exercises.

It's been slightly less than 4 weeks since my surgery. I was kind of hoping that wouldn't be enough time to lose a whole lot of muscle, but oh well. I guess it'll come back eventually; I just hate having to work my way back up. And I don't like feeling weak. So hopefully it won't take too long to get back up to full strength again.

I expect you will get back up to 8 pretty quickly - just give your body time to remember what it can do!
