Future planning is hard

Saturday, October 06, 2012

My mom is in an assisted living facility and has been having trouble adjusting. It is getting better but watching her makes me realize how hard change is as you get older. I find that inertia really sets in and it is easier to just stay with things the way they are. Unfortunately everything is always changing and all of a sudden you find yourself surrounded by new issues. Keeping healthy is just the best plan and I am really using the Sparkle to keep me motivated. But staying involved is important and I find that I use excuses to be less involved. Not good, because being social is another way to stay healthy. At least the weekend is nice and planning to have a fun Sunday.

I like routine and have a problem with change as well, but you are right, it is inevitable and those who do best are those who are flexible.

My mother volunteered for asst. living within 6 weeks of my dad moving into an Alzheimer care unit in the same facility. She's remarkably resilient and has made lots of friends and does a lot of things that we've never seen her do before. I hope your mother will take a chance and join in some of the activities. Our quiet, sedentary mother, now 91, came into her own once she was free of 'responsibilities.' Hugs to both of you as you go through this next phase of life, Sunny!
