Going past 25 pounds lost feels weird.
It's like when I was a kid (in the 70's) and thinking about the year 2000. It seemed so far away, so magical. Oh my gosh, I'd be all of 35 years old when it came around!
But it came and went and it wasn't magical and it wasn't apocalypitical. It just WAS, and then life moved on. And then I was 40 years old. And then I was 45 years old. And soon enough I will be 50. And life still goes on.
Weight loss is starting to feel a bit like that. Now my ticker says 27 pounds lost. the number on the scale says 175.4. I reached 25 pounds lost, which seemed magical when it was so far away, but now it's here and life (weight loss) still goes on.
At 163 pounds I will switch from "obese" on the BMI scale to "overweight". I know the BMI scale is slightly discredited and many professionals don't like to use it, but it's there and it's something I can use to measure some kind of progress. For that purpose, it works for me, even though I agree that it's not very useful if you happen to maintain a fair amount of lean muscle.
Anyway, since I seem to need a new Magic Number, mine will be 163.
Currently my weight loss goal says I am aiming for 160 by December 31. It also says I am ahead of that goal. But if I change the goal to 155, it says I won't make it at this pace. So what's a girl to do? Keep it at 160, I guess; keep up the good work, stick to the plan, and celebrate when I make it there.
But in the new year, I will have a new goal. Because I will still have another 40 pounds to lose after that.
Yesterday evening I went out with my friend on a road trip to a small town about an hour's drive from where I live. When we arranged the trip, it was just before lunch time, and luckily I hadn't eaten lunch yet. Since I didn't know anything about where we might end up eating that night, I had an under 300-calorie lunch: egg beaters omelette with onion, mushroom, and spinach, with a little salsa on the side to punch it up a bit. That left me with about 1000 calories for dinner if I needed it.
We tried to get into a few restaurants, but of course all the best ones were booked to the hilt on a Friday night. But we found a Mexican place that used a waiting list rather than reservations, so we put our names on the list, sat at the bar and drank virgin margaritas for 20 minutes while we waited for a table.
Here in the Great White North we don't have a lot of authentic Mexican restaurants so I am not too familiar with the food. It looked to me like I was out of luck and was going to have to order something wrapped in flour tortillas with lots of cheese, until my friend showed me a third page on the menu and I debated between chicken in mole sauce and a grilled 6 oz. steak with three bacon-wrapped shrimp.
I ended up having the steak, which also came with a salad to start (lime vinaigrette on the side). I chose rice and beans instead of sweet potato fries as my side dish, and ate a quarter-cup of the beans, scraping off the melted cheese, and left the rice untouched.
So my big indulgences were the bacon on the shrimp and the mango margarita I drank while standing at the bar. Since I had 1000 calories to work with, I think I still came in "under budget".
