The tale of the Treacherous muesli or how valuable SP's food tracker is

Thursday, October 04, 2012

I swear I checked before eating it but when I looked at the muesli packet my brain interpreted "131cal per 30g serving"as "131cal per 100g"!!!!
So I confidently measured out 100g in a bowl, added 2/3c milk and munched away...
I then updated my food tracker on SP only to discover 100g of muesli is 436cal!
FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY SIX calories in one (kiddie-sized) bowl of no added sugar muesli! I could hardly believe it so I double checked the packet info and yes it is 436cal per 100g.
Thank goodness I had enough 'spare' calories today so it didn't wreck my day 'foodwise' but I shudder when I think of how I used to eat loads of that muesli thinking it was healthy - you know...whole grain, no added sugar, fibre etc etc...! But I was probably eating 1500cal just on that muesli when I was snacking on it throughout the day!
In some ways I'm glad bc all this means that I'm learning and that I'm likely to see results...so all is not lost! But I won't be buying muesli again!

So true! I had similar experience . Not with muesli but with muffins. Its not like I have been eating those very often, may be once a month or less. Anyway - I was on my weekend lecture and went to get some coffee. As usual - they ask you if you would like anything else. I was going to order muffin ( as a treat of course, i went for 8 mile run this morning) until i noticed calorie sign next to it. It was over 500! Such an eye opener. I don't think I will look at muffins anymore. emoticon emoticon
