To cut or not to cut...

Thursday, October 04, 2012

No, no. I am not talking about cutting/slashing myself. Just wanted to clear that up.

But I am considering surgery. Thanks to an emergency c-section, followed by a twin pregnancy and then a singleton pregnancy, I am one of those 'lucky' women with an abdominal hernia. Actually, I do consider myself lucky, because mine doesn't hurt. But it does make me look 6-months pregnant, no matter what my weight. And I hate it.

So I've been wondering whether or not to have elective surgery to fix my hernia.

On the one had, it's a battle wound AND it doesn't hurt (right now, at least). And I am more than just my looks.

On the other hand, I hate looking pregnant when I'm not. And surgery could fix this.

I am not making any decisions soon as I can't have the surgery until my kids are much bigger and don't require any lifting (for hugs, for tiredness, for injuries, etc). But this is ALWAYS on my mind. I mean, aren't most of us here on SP trying to make ourselves more healthy, and isn't one of the perks of getting healthy looking good?

So, what would you do if you were in my place? Just curious. There are no right or wrong answers, just opinions. But be nice. This is MY body we are talking about!

You may not have any pain now, but that doesn't mean you won't later. I've known people who've had the operation. It's not bad. Yeah, you'll have to lay off any intense exercise for a while. However, once you're healed, you're back to some normalcy.

I vote for getting the operation if you're a good candidate.

I would say go for it if the risks are minimum and it would help YOU feel better. I know you asked for opinions here, but really, do what YOU want to do and what will make YOU happy!

It is a "damaged" area, and if it can be corrected, I can only imagine that would be good for your over all health.

Hope this helps!
Hugs,
Beth

I have a friend that had an abdominal hernia as well (after donating a kidney!) and she was miserable about how she looked and felt because of it. She did have the surgery and is so much happier now!

You definitely should plan on doing it someday...and not just for vanity reasons - there are risks in that the hernia can expand or rupture if I'm not mistaken, right?

Have the surgery. You deserve to feel good about yourself!
