2 down 4 to go---
for german dance groups October is a busy time
We played at the Haughbrough house on Pittsburgh's south side on sept 22
then there was a show in north hills that I had to miss
On sept 29 was the "Kids Kick off" at the mannerchior
This was the first "real" october fest at the club
the hardest part is avoiding the chef cooked buffet -- it is delicious and yes at this club we have a real chef on staff to insure it is authentic fresh quisine.
what made it easier is I just happened to be broke at the moment.
This saturday will be a different story. It is geared for adults the food will be the same but what I have to remember is the money in my pocket is for the time when my Lady friend and he daughter will accompany me and mine to the festival. I pushing for the 20th because I know that band is very entertaining on that evening. It will be my "blow off day " for the month of October.
There has also been another change with the group. Since it has been decimated by older members retiring and a group splitting off for social/political reasons, every one has to " step it up" to fill in the gaps and be more committed .
So I learned enough to be backup in 2 dances in case of any unforeseen circumstance and ----- I am playing percussion in one of the dances----
It is called "The Ambos Polka" which means anvil in German
So now my job between two songs and while trying to be a showman is to carry out a 3' by 18" log then go back and pick up a full size blacksmith anvil and carry it out , place it on the log then produce a horse shoe , pliers and hammer from my tool pouch.
Then I have to examine and size the horse shoe until the vorplattler calls for the music to start. The percussion for this song is played with the different sounds that can be produced with a horse shoe hammer and anvil.
Then in certain sections of the dance I have to basically add lib a skit involving measuring and inspecting the shoe then shake my head no like it is not ready and go back to the anvil rhythm for the next section of dance
I'm not sure who is the center of attention is during this performance me or the dancers.
OBTW for some reason they store the anvil in the attic above stage left where is pictured in my previous blog.
trust me bringing it up and down the stairs is the kettle bell exercise from --Heck--
Well I Hope everyone else is having an interesting and exciting October too
