September seemed to just fly by! My resolution for the month was "open" and thanks to some input from some fellow Sparkers I decided strength training needed to be my focus. Actually it has needed to be my focus for quite awhile. I've been finding as I get older it is just harder to keep things in line (hello waist!) than in the past. My weight fluctuates only a few pounds but things seem to be settling differently than before. I know strength training can make the biggest impact on my metabolism and help me in this fight we call getting older. But it has still been the easiest thing for me to blow off. I didn't make my goal of strength training three times a week in September but I did take steps to start hitting that goal. October was supposed to be 20 minutes of cardio everyday. I am totally okay on cardio due to my love of Spinning and cycling so I've decided to make October strength training three days a week instead again.
The reason it's been so hard for me to get the strength training is has to do with a couple of things. First of all, time. We all know about that. I used to get up at 5:00 am and go to the gym before work but I'm kinda over that now. It's been years since I did that and I really just don't want to. (Insert whine here.) I have a fitness center at work so I can basically go over any time and there are two weights only classes that I absolutely love to attend. The problem is other things have been getting in the way - client visits, doctor appointments, meetings, etc. I haven't been able to go regularly for a couple of months. I love the class atmosphere so therefore I am totally unmotivated to go and just lift by myself. I had to do something. So in September I actually also joined a gym by my house. I don't have to pay for my work membership since I'm a Spin instructor so I felt it was okay to pay for another membership. The gym I joined has a weights only class very similar to what is offered at work and they also have a lot more weight equipment than what we have at work too. It will be convenient to go in the evenings if I miss my class at lunch but more importantly I can go on the weekends. I don't live close enough to work to drive there on the weekends so this should work! Plus, it will be an opportunity to meet new people and of course, I'll hit a few of their Spin classes too. I may even get the chance to instruct there as well. I feel this action will definitely help put me back on track. I've had my two complimentary training sessions and it just felt good to lift some weight again!
Other September happenings - I wrote the blog on my son moving out. We are still working that relationship out since it has been strained. We are having dinner tonight and I hope to be able to have an adult conversation with him and get back on track. I am taking a new position at work finally after 9 months of trying to move into something more challenging after completing my MBA. I'm very excited about the opportunity - it offers a lot of growth with a great group and should meet all of the needs I am looking for. I took the Project Management boot camp a few weeks ago and will take my CAPM test on October 12. I've been studying every day (and it's been getting in the way of my workouts too) but it'll be over soon and I just hope I pass.
That's the September wrap up and I'm ready for fall and October! Bring it on!
