News about my suspended Kindergartner

Monday, September 24, 2012

I blogged it all out here on my custodial aunt blog so if you want to read it here it is:

The cliff notes:
- calling the cops on a 5 year old is stupid.
- found a facility who works in a day therapy setting to help YOUNG kids with behavior problems... and no they don't rely on meds, but they have a 96% rate of success.
- haven't heard of this place before because they just opened in February - but they are part of a national franchise that has been in business for a few years
- they are the sincere, and caring
- Help could be on the way.... I am excited and relieved.

Now to get back to fitness and taking care of me again!!!!

Your Custodial Auntie blog brought me to tears. I am so hoping this facility is the right place for your family. Will be keeping you in my thoughts! This little girl is lucky to have you fighting for her. And as a sidenote, I completely agree it was ridiculous for them to call police on a 5 year old. Obviously the staff are ill-prepared and trained and maybe that makes it all the better that the place you found is FULL of trained instructor/therapists. Best of luck to you and your family!

It can be so frustrating when you know something is wrong with your child and it takes something that extreme to have proof. Yet no one wants to nail down a diagnosis or treatment plan because of age.

I had a stepson who showed severe behavioral disorders at 3. Changes in routine would completely throw him out of whack. He would get mad and kick or hit teachers, students, daycare providers. He was kicked out of two preschools/preK programs. We tried therapy for 6 months and finally the therapist recommended we get him tested. We tried everything...sticker charts for good behavior, redirecting, punishment, rewards (not all at the same time though) and it would work for about 2-4 weeks, and then he would go back to the same old thing. There was nothing he cared about enough to keep him from acting like that. The biggest similarity I notice from reading your blog was that he had no empathy about hurting others or myself. He would also "phase out" when it came to that.

After much fighting with my ex, and after the 2nd preschool kicked him out, we had him tested. He was diagnosed with ODD and high-functioning autism. He was brilliant and could communicate fine, but was inept in social situations and had not empathy towards other people. Thanks to resource help, a good elementary school, good doctors, and a final step of medication (when all other options were considered), he was able to be in a normal classroom with a little bit of resource help. We also held him back a year of kindergarten, which I think also helped.

I'm not saying this is what's going on or what needs to be done. I just want you to know that there is help. Things can change. Just keep pushing to get help and someone will step up and help. It looks like you are finally getting there, so please just continue to have hope. emoticon

I been Spark AWOL due to some issues of my own involving my kids (biological and not custodial but it is all the same when our kids are hurting, right?)

Glad to hear things have a light at the end of the tunnel....

I'm glad that you found a great place!!! I used to teach in a residential/day treatment facility (they had several diff programs depending on the child's needs) and everyone there definitely had the best interest of the students/children in mind. I hope that this helps!!!
