People (can) Suck!

Monday, September 24, 2012

I was going to say people suck but then decided that is a nasty generalization!

I love being a veterinarian and I love dealing with people an dtheir pets (in general) but I HATE dealing with staff! That is just not me. i can talk to people one on one and reason and discuss til I'm blue in the face but when dealing with people who are disrespectful or just plain stubborn and closed minded.... my brain wants to explode and I want to tear my hair out.

I have one employee who is fabulous in some things and horrible in others! She is hard working, has excellent technical skills, cares about the animals, is good with clients, excellent organizational skills.... but is a monster in other ways. She has a bullying manner towards other employees when they make errors, she makes harsh critical statements, she swears, she says mean, deragatory things about other staffmembers and me apparently behind their backs, she has now officially had conflict with every other employee..... just putting this on paper makes me thing that I should be firing her !!!! But I can't do it! She has so much potential ut her temper and her lack of skills when it comes to working well with others is a disaster... sometimes - when errors are made, when things don't go as they should....

At least I can aknowledge and own that i am a terrible people manager! I have hired a practice manager - she will start in Oct and she will have the gumption to tell people to smarten up and how to behave and be able to enforce it!

My problem with this person is that before I bought the clinic I was friends with her... I think that is where the lack of discipline stems from...

I just want everyone to get along, to keep unkind comments to themselves and out of the workplace, and remember that we all entered this industry because we loved pets and wanted to contribute to their health and happiness!

thanks for letting me vent!

Do you think you might want to establish a job performance review or evaluation program? Or could you sit down with this person and tell her what you told us, that she could advance but that her attitude and behavior gets in the way of her abilities?

It won't be easy, but it could be done.

One would think that with the job market being the way it is that people would simply act properly if for no other reason than to save their rotten hides! Sheesh!

Wow! I could have sworn you were my mil and writing about someone in her office. She's a midwife and worked for the Doc for 10 years I think, but just had enough because of the billing person. It's sad. Yes, some people do suck! If you are this frustrated imagine how some of the other employees feel. If you don't want to lose them, like that Doc lost my mil, you should let her go. I hope the office manager gets it done for you. But, what are you going to do if she circumvents the office manager and comes crying to you face to face? Will you have the gumption to look her in the face and tell her you give the office manager, whom I assume you are not friends with, your 100% support? I'm not writing this to be mean, really I'm not! I'm on your side. It just sounded to me like if the confrontation were brought to you, you might back down or tell the office manager to give her another chance. I guess, I'm playing Devil's advocate a little bit here, but totally trying to help! Good luck!

I've had my share working with people that have "controlling" personalities and requires a lot of discipline on your part to not lose it. Blessings to you as you deal with these on-the-job challenges.
