Small victories

SP is taking over my life - in a good way.

Take a comment I posted on a message board earlier today, saying I didn't give my old clothes away because they were only fit for recyling. Then I did a pile of ironing and cleared out the wardrobe. Came up with what we'll call a short stack for Oxfam (charity shop). These are, variously:

2 pairs trousers so loose I look a sight in them
1 blouse so loose it shows most of my (unglamorous) bra
1 blouse so baggy it slips back on my shoulders
1 skirt I simply don't like any more.

So that's four items out of five that I am offloading because of SP.

It's a completely new experience to me to be giving away clothes before they fall apart, but I don't want to be tempted to wear them.

I've thrown away a pair of black trousers that are so loose if I hold my gut in they fall off. I've been wearing them about three years and I wouldn't wish them on anyone.

Then I went to Marks and Spencer this afternoon. Small local branch. I bought:

Half a pound of smoked fish
One cucumber
One pound of tomatoes
(Very quietly: some things that I am ashamed of and am not going to list here but I've got rid of what was left over and I'm back on track tomorrow. It's been a cold wet miserable day here. So much for the autumn push.)
One pair dark blue chinos.

I don't usually buy clothes at the same time as food, but it had to be done. You see they were cheap, Marks and Sparks are good quality, and they are a size smaller than the last pair of trousers I bought, two sizes smaller than the ones that have gone in the recycling bin. I cannot remember the last time I bought trousers this size. Honestly. It must be 10 years. It's not just the loss of weight you know. It's the conversion of flab to muscle.

So these new trousers, they are a UK size 20, and from Marks and Sparks. Any Brit will tell you their sizes are not generous at all. One of my goals is to be in an 18 by Christmas. I thought I had to lose 25 pounds to get there. It looks as though a stone (14 pounds) will do. These trousers are not in any way tight, either. Very comfortable, very nice fit considering the eccentricities of my shape.

Have not had the best day today, Sparkwise. I was fine yesterday in good weather. Then today it rained all day and I've got a bit of a cold and hit the empty carbs. Excuses, excuses. At least I don't think of it as the norm like I did before. And these trousers have given my confidence a real boost.

Just a thought. Do you think they put the wrong size label in the trousers? I still can't believe they fit.

WAY TO GO!!! Keep up the great work. I think one of the most rewarding parts of weight loss is getting into a smaller size and getting rid of the baggy-saggy clothes!

Congratulations on the smaller size!! emoticon

I know what you mean. I too have been getting rid of clothes only when they fall apart. I've been reluctant to buy new ones at the size I am, since I don't want to be this size and keep hoping to drop a size first. Of course, I've been this size for several years now, so what I have is looking pretty sad and as you say, not fit to pass on to others. But I actually was able to zip up a dress that I was unable to last year (bought it for a wedding last year, zipped it up as far as it would go, then used safety pins to keep it closed and wore the jacket that came with it so no one knew). I was really hoping that it would be too big, instead of just fitting. But even though my weight is dropping very slowly, it is dropping, and I am looking forward to being able to give away clothes that are still in good shape because the are too big, instead of worn out!!

Congrats on dropping to a lower size! I'm going shopping myself this week because some of my slacks are looking pretty sloppy on me. Not sure what size I'll need. It'll be a surprise. Glad you found a pair that you liked.

Glad your sizes are going down. I am looking forward to getting into some smaller pants I have. I can get them on now but they are too tight.

I grew up in the post-war years so have a huge reluctance to get rid of anything that "still has a bit of wear in it". But all they do is clutter up drawers and shelves because I don't wear them. I've managed to get rid of a few more bags, though - so I am improving! Congratulations on your downsizing and the M&S purchases. (We won't say anything about the "extras"; they fall into the peccadillo category and are meant to be part of our secret lives!).
Hope the weather improves so that you can keep on keeping on - and so that you have drier and happier cats.

I think the pants are probably sized correctly, especially when you describe how big the old clothes were. I love the feeling of getting rid of the old stuff- whether clothes or clutter- and making room for the new you!

As horrible, out of date, or shabby we may think our cast offs are, there is someone else who does not have and needs. I routinely empty out my closets and bureau and donate to a local food and clothing pantry. They're always appreciative of any donations.

I have some pants in the closet that I can't wait to get in. I know you feel proud of yourself for getting in yours. I'm proud you got rid of the you know whats. You'll do better next week. Maybe a nice soup or something you like warm will make your cold better. Have a good week.

I love how you describe the clothing that no longer fits =) I have a bunch of those myself, and though I have no plans to ever fit into them again, I'm still having a hard time getting rid of them. Heck, I still have clothes in a size 10, from when I was in high school. I doubt the late 80's - early 90's style will come back any time soon so I really should pass them on. Maybe someone else can make a great Hallowe'en costume from them ;o)
Congrats on the great find at the store. All those walks and trips to the gym are definitely making a wonderful difference for you. Keep it up =)

Cold weekends are always hard to keep on food track. Too much time and if I am in the store where the temptations are, I tend to indulge. Sigh. We are human. You have done great, don't obsess. Fantastic to get new clothes. Great win.!! emoticon

You're the best. Being a guy, I'm not very into talk about clothes, but enjoyed the blog anyway. It's fun reading about your progress in other terms than scale readings.

Having a bit of a cold happens. Sometimes it means your body needs to recharge a little. Enjoy your rest day.
