The Secret of Happiness

Sunday, September 23, 2012

I just finished a novel by Joy Fielding. In it, one of the characters said, "The secret of happiness is to lower your expectations." I thought that that comment was quite profound and it stuck with me.
Is happiness just a matter of not expecting so much? So much from yourself? From others? We seem to put such huge demands for perfection on ourselves in pursuit of the perfect body, the perfect home, the perfect children, the perfect pets, the perfect vacation...
I haven't weighed myself this weekend. I am not going to expect the perfect weight loss this week. I will continue to eat a proper vegan diet, buy less or no processed foods, and accept myself for who am and what I have and be grateful.

That's interesting....I hope she means lowering unrealistic expectations, not just giving up. I think that sounds good! The passage of time is humbling, but I'm learning to accept where I am and appreciate it, even though I'm trying to make changes..odd paradox!

I have recently wondered the same thing. If I expected lessof myself, my kids, etc. would I be happier or at least less stressed? Definately food for thought. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with your goals.
