Body by Design - new gym!

Saturday, September 22, 2012

My trainer, JP, has decided to move gyms and work for the place his old manager opened. So Aqua Endurance has turned into Body by Design. I'm doing a one-month trial to see how I like it. It's super-tough!

Sessions are 30 minutes instead of one hour. But there are fewer breaks and more intense exercises. I've had four sessions and tried one boot camp. So far, so good.

Tonight's workout was pretty cool.
I started with fast punches on a heavy bag interspersed with tricep pull-downs in increasing duration per interval. So I started with 15 seconds of fast punches and 8 pull-downs, and by the fifth interval, I did a minute of fast punches and 20 pull-downs.

Then I got some 3-pound dumbbells and had to do jumping sidesteps on and off a 12" platform while punching an imaginary person. One minute of that, and then we switched to straight jumps on and off the platform. Three jumps, ten punches...times ten. Whew!

JP told me I could rest a bit. He suggested I sit on the platform. Ok, that's nice - a break! As soon as I sat down, he handed me a 12-pound medicine ball and had me do sit-up/stand-ups, pressing the ball over my head both when I was laying down and standing up. Three minutes of these! I managed to do 35 of them, so next time I'll try to do 40. Not sure where the break went, but I guess 10 seconds has to be enough...

I switched to sit-ups/stand-ups without the medicine ball presses. Instead I had to do front kicks after every rep. And they had to be snappy! Forty of those, and back to jumping sidesteps on the platform, this time with 5-pound weights. That extra 2 pounds per hand was brutal!! Oh, and did I mention I've had weighted boxing gloves on this whole time? Yeah...

Final round! Straight sit-ups with a punch at the top. 20 of these. Then up and jumping up and down on the platform with punches again. And repeat three times. So tough.

Tomorrow morning I try a second boot camp. Hopefully it's as much fun as the first one! These land workouts might just be doable after all...

THIS MADE ME SMILE SO MUCH. I love how you write about how tough it is, but still come across as aching for more! I had a really fun day at the park yesterday, and had an epiphany that when you're moving and it's tough BUT FUN you actually do crave going back. So I have a new appreciation for your efforts!!!
