Smack my head

Friday, September 21, 2012

I'm glad the work week is over. I don't say this in a "Oh my god, I hate my job" kind of way like I used to. I no longer dread going to work. Trying to learn a whole new approach to patient care, protocols, policy and procedure and being responsible for every patient need is exhausting. But I love it.

Yesterday I was supposed to be at the desk with Linda my preceptor but she had been charge the day before and wanted to get back to the bedside so we ended up trading spots with Stacie and got a team of 6 patients. (nurses with orientees are supposed to have no more than 5) But we ended up discharging one within the first couple of hours. So that left us with 5 and we didn't get the next admission so that was cool.

I have to say that nursing is very interesting. Beyond sometimes feeling like a highly educated waitress there is the figuring out the little puzzles you are left by a physician, deciding if an electrolyte needs replacing, or many other things. For example, I have to read every progress note to figure out what the docs plan is, if a consult is needed (if they don't outright order it, themselves,) and make sure they have ordered or obtain an order for what is in their plan. It's pretty neat. I think.

I was pretty exhausted last night when I got home. I barely made it an hour after getting home before I feel asleep on the couch. I didn't even watch Glee!! IT was a good exhausted though.

When I arrived from work on Wednesday evening I went about cleaning up my kitchen and I went to pick up a small box from some medifast food on the floor. I bent to put in the recycling bag and I misjudged the distance and smacked my head on the of the "odds and ends" drawer. I literally poked a tiny hole in forehead just above the inner corner of my left eyebrow. I was bleeding a little. Eric immediately got some neosprorin and a small round bandaid and got the bleeding stopped and placed the bandaid. He then got a cold pack and sat me down in the lay-z-boy and put the ice on my head and covered me with a blanket and told me to sit and relax. How sweet is that? Luckily, I didn't end up with a goose egg above my eye because I iced it for a couple of hours on and off.

I'm off until tuesday. I'm going to give myself a break today and do light cleaning and go to old Navy where they have my beloved Rockstar Jeans on sale for $19 a pair (down from $34). Too good a sale to pass up!

Thank you for your hard work! So glad that you didn't hurt yourself worse...though that had to be painful. Enjoy your time off!

I'm glad you didn't whack your eye!! Congrats on picking a good one. emoticon I'm proud of you for becoming a nurse. We are going to need so many as we baby boomers really start booming unless we mend our ways and start being healthy. We never did do as we were told however. To quick to question everything. Like, I'm wondering right now if I'll ever be able to buy jeans in Old Navy???
