The Car Ride, The Heat, and the Holy Cake

Friday, September 21, 2012

First of all, WOW! I did not expect anyone to read, much less comment on my blog. You are all awesome. emoticon I really, truly appreciate the community here. It's only been a few days, and I'm already counting my blessings for having found this site.

Second of all, cake. Seriously... cake and lots of it. That's what's facing me this weekend. My fiancee's grandparents made it to the amazing 60 year anniversary mark, and we're all driving out to Nebraska to celebrate. So, being from Colorado, I've got a 8 hour car ride ahead of me (car food ideas, anyone?), and I've got a lot of heat and farmland to look forward to. And then there's the cake. If there's one thing I've learned about visiting family in Nebraska, it's that they love their food. And since it's a celebration, I'm already picturing barbecue, potato salad, macaroni salad, cobblers, pies, and cake. I'm pretty certain the only healthy choice will be some sort of fruit salad where marshmallows reign supreme.

In short, I'm a little worried. BUT, I've got a plan.

I'm bringing bananas for the car ride (though I could use other ideas there), and I'm going to stretch and walk in the early morning, before it gets too hot. And finally, I'm gonna practice a whole lotta portion control. I'll control my hunger before I go to the party with bananas, vitamin water, and perhaps some yogurt with granola. And yes, I'm going to eat cake. But a very small piece. Because cake is not the boss of me. emoticon

I'll see you all on the other side!

Great ideas! Popcorn is definitely on the list now, as are balance bars.

And hugs and kisses may be calorie-free, but are they slobber free? Methinks I see lots of gummy elderly folk kissing my cheeks this weekend. Gotta love it! emoticon

Popcorn - prepop some popcorn and bag it by serving size so you will know how much you had.
When I travel I like to have a variety of tastes so that if I am getting sleepy it will zap me back awake. I use a sour or fruity flavor and portion control them ahead of time.
I am traveling in a couple of weeks. I plan on using your banana idea and the carrots and celery mentioned above.

Good Luck and safe travels!

bananas and oranges are great travel fruits. Salt free anything like pita chips, radishes, carrot sticks, celery sticks. We take these on flights of more than two hours instead of those nasty, sky-high(no pun intended) priced snacks on planes. cherry tomatoes, balance bars.. they have lots of protein for staying power..

balance bars can also be eaten JUST before the BBQ with a half gallon of water to forego the fattening foods.
Most of all, enjoy the historic time with family. Hugs and kisses are calorie-free!
