I've been doing SP for 6 days now, and this is the end of day 5 of my own personal 30-day challenge. Part of that challenge is to blog each day to keep myself accountable, and the other part is to get in lots of hiking to help me get back into hiking shape (bad knee injury took me out of the game about a year and a half ago).
So it's still 100+ degree weather in Phoenix -- and even though I say this every fall -- I don't remember the summer being so hot so late into the year! Wishful thinking on my part, as my mother always points out that it is usually hot until her birthday (first week of October). So while the rest of my friends are posting photos of pumpkins and fall images -- I'm trying to live vicariously and enjoy the fall weather the rest of the country is experiencing.
A few months ago, I bought a groupon for 5 private ballroom dancing lessons at a studio I hadn't been to before. I've done ballroom off and on for several years (oh who's kidding who here -- my college days were much longer ago than 'several years' seems to imply. hehe) but had spent the last year or two focusing on social west coast swing (whee! -- check it out on youtube sometime, sultry social dance = FUN). So I thought this groupon would be a great way to get back 'in the swing' of things with regard to ballroom. So today was my first day back doing ballroom in probably a year and half -- and HOLY COW -- I'd forgotten how much I missed it.
Today my lesson was mainly a review of rumba (one of my favorite latin dances), cha cha cha (aka, the dreaded cha cha), salsa and hustle. Next lesson will focus more on the smooth dances.
If you have never tried ballroom dancing -- you are totally missing out on a fun social activity that doesn't involve the couch or eating food with friends. Despite what some people think, it's not just older retired folks. In fact, ballroom dancing is quite popular among all ages of people, including college kids. The best part too, is that anyone can do it! You don't need a partner to go to most classes (the classes usually are set up so that everyone rotates partners -- you learn much faster this way), and at the dance parties most studios host, you get to spend a couple hours (usually on the order of $7-10 for the night) that includes a dance lesson and social dancing afterwards.
So that constituted my light exercise for the day (going a little easy on the knee with getting back into hiking shape). And boy, by the end of the hour I'd worked up a bit of a sweat -- of course the rhythm dances will do that to ya. So fun!
Today I also think I may have broken my own personal record for most efficient use of time throughout the day -- I got so much done -- just love it when that happens. While I was waiting to get my oil changed, I walked (in the 100+ degree heat) over to a nearby Paradise Cafe & Bakery and got a salad for lunch and for a little splurge, I decided to buy some mini chocolate chip cookies (aka chippers). I bought 6, thinking I'd save some for later. Well uhm, that didn't work so well. But they are small right?! Well, as it turns out those 6 chippers cost 360 calories!! Yikes. But I still managed to get through the day without going over any of of the upper limits, so I'll mark today as another successful day and I'll be more careful with those splurges.
Looking forward to the next 25 days!
