My latest project.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

So I have a new project, something I've never undertaken before. I have aquired a fledgling spotted turtle dove. I am calling him "he" simply because he has such a fierce little temperment, but I will be tickled pink if "he" is a "she" simply because she's so fiesty! Anyway, he must've fallen out of the nest, or been pushed. I have no idea how old he is, he's not fully adult-feathered yet and he can't fly. I am raising him with the idea that at some point soon he can join the doves in our back yard. When he's ready.

He's even a weight-loss partner....Monday he was looking peaky and not enthused with the food I offered (which was bird porridge made of soaked canary seed blended up) so I did a quick walk up to the specialty pet store. More than a mile and a half in double-quick time just so I could get home and offer the poor little creature something he'd hopefully find more appetising. :)

He is gaining about ten grams a day, preening his feathers, and loves to sit on my shoulder. I've been feeding him a hand-raising bird food that is like mush. Well, all afternoon I've been picking dried mush off my face, throat, ears and hair since he likes to snuggle in real close. My daughter was here earlier and he adored sitting in the hood of her pullover, cuddled up under her ponytail. Warm as toast.

Sweet little bird, not really beautiful right now but he will be soon. My little messy chicken will be a pretty dove one day soon. :)

As for the nutrition...well, it's coming along nicely. I've upped the veggie consumption and it helps the hunger pangs. Walking every day this week except one, and even on that day I did a mile and back to the store. I've slacked off on the water and have to get that pumped back up.

Our last two kids graduate high school tonight and tomorrow. I can't comprehend how fast the time flies!

I really enjoyed reading this blog! I had been thinking about you and your birds and how delightful to read that you are caring for a little friend. I agree with SASIKHASI1, you may have your friend for life!

Wonderful picture of you (and the bird). You look gorgeous!

Congratulations to your children on their graduation...and congratulations to you too!

You do know that doves tend to mate for life and it sounds like he/she has picked you for their very own lol. We have a whole flock of doves that have hung out in our back yard for two years now. It is time to start filling the feeders again. I do not feed them much in the summer, but I do keep them filled in the winter. They are so pretty and I love to listen to their cooing. Veggies do help with hunger and they are calorie low and nutrition high. I love fresh veggies. I went to the store three days ago and spent 67 bucks just on fresh fruits and veggies. That seems to be the bulk of my grocery shopping these days. I love salads so that is fine with me. Have a great day and keep up the good work.
