Food Porn

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

I've often wondered why there is so much excitement about blogging. I never really felt the urge to share my thoughts with the world. However, now that I'm here on SP I decided I should try it, but what should I talk about? While waiting for inspiration to strike, I happened upon an article on the fitbe website written by Theresa O'Rourke of Women's Health called The Food Porn Problem (I'll add a link if I can figure out how).

The article made some points that resonated within me. It talked about how pictures of delicious looking food can actually cause your body to stimulate the hormone that signals hunger. It also pointed out that the overweight tend to be more sensitive to the allure of a picture of a luscious hunk of chocolate cake barely dressed in a frosting negligee or a steamy shot of a dish of homemade mac-n-cheese.

It made me think about how we are bombarded with images of food. There is actually a website called FoodPornDaily.com (which I will be avoiding at all costs). Unfortunately, have you noticed that, in general the pictures almost always look better than the actual item. For example, I love the McRib and the pictures always make it look mouthwatering, but if I get one it's usually squished flat and unbelievably messy. The same holds true of most fast food items.

I guess I need to try and keep this article in mind when I find my myself drooling over a picture of a perfect dessert or a calorie filled casserole covered in cheese. It may look gorgeous in the picture, but it's probably not worth losing any progress I've made in becoming a healthier, happier person.

Here's the link to the article if anyone is interested. Just try to ignore the picture of the brownies dripping chocolate sauce.

    OK! You got me!! LOL!!

Food Porn ... hee hee..had to check it out emoticon

Definitely food for thought - something we all need to remember - that they are trying to make us want it! That it doesn't really look as good in real life (no different than the air brushed women in Ads!), or taste as good as it looks!!

I always say - Food doesn't TASTE as good as skinny FEELS ...

p.s. I added you as a friend - I hope you will too..

It is so true how many images of food there are around us. And you are correct that the picture is always better than the product when you get it!
