I had to write a bio for our running newsletter for students and parents. This is what I wrote:
I am an English teacher who had never run for enjoyment in middle or high school. In March 2011, I started training for a 5k and signed up for a charity race. It was an amazing experience—energy, excitement; it made me want to train for more races. In 2011, I joined Students Run LA and completed my first half marathon in December 2011 and the LA Marathon in March 2012.
Running makes me feel empowered. Running is good for health, relieves stress, and boosts energy.
I love being a leader of SRLA, and encouraging my students to set and accomplish goals, and achieve more than they dreamed—powerful tools for life training, not just marathon training.
I am also a mother and my daughter is already following in my footsteps, running her first kids race in April 2012 and will run another in November.
If someone who dreaded running the mile in P.E. could learn to love running and the feeling of crossing the finish line, anything is possible.
