Day 25: Onward and Upward!

Today I got to enjoy a beautiful day hiking in the Columbia River Gorge with my family and friends (this photo is from one of the waterfalls we visited on our trek). It was the first hike we ever tried to take my stepdaughter on and I wasn't sure how she would react. Would she have the attention span to focus on "walking nowhere" for hours on end? Would she be interested in the gorgeous (pun intended) scenery when it usually takes a s screen to capture and hold her attention? Turned out that the answer to both was YES! She had a great time running ahead of the group and then back to us (not unlike the German Shepherd who also accompanied us). We're both pleasantly tuckered out at this point, with lovely memories to add to our stores as winter approaches.
Last time I went hiking with my brother, his girlfriend and my partner, I was so incredibly out of shape that I became overheated and exhausted, and then twisted my ankle. I literally started to cry at one point because i was in so much pain, and also because i was so embarrassed at how much I was slowing everyone down. This time I managed to keep up (though there was a point that I had to take a break). It was good for me to have my stepdaughter to focus on to take my mind off of my own fatigue. I can't wait till next time. Hope the weather holds out for at least one more this season. Someday I'd love to be able to do a tough hike without even getting winded. Something to strive for!
