Maintenance and Life

Had a great weekend....Friday, I went to lunch with hubby, then to the Husker volleyball game. Did a little more sports watching Saturday...Huskers went 1 for 2, won the VB game, lost the football game. Oh well...can't win them all!

Sunday, I did a little cleaning (very little), but enough to coast by for another week, and Lola and I took a nice walk on a beautiful Fall-like afternoon! It is fun to have someone to walk with everyday. She is still a little erratic, she wanders all over the road and I am constantly changing which hand in which I'm holding her leash, but she does a little better every time. We went all day Sat. with no accidents, but then had an accident after our walk last night. I think I didn't stop long enough while we were walking, for her to go, and then she paid me back by going once we got home. OOPS!

Friday, I stopped and got my nails done, after lunch and before the Husker game (which was at 4 p.m.). Ran into an old neighbor at the nail salon. This is a story of real coincidence....I remember the day I went to greet our new neighbors, probably back about 1978, and knocked on their door with a plate of cookies. The person who answered the door was a classmate of mine from high school! Now we both went to high school in a smaller town about 10 miles east of the big city (Lincoln, NE), and growing up, we lived on the same street in Waverly. We were schoolmates from kindergarten through 12th grade.

My ex-neighbor is in the front row second from the end on the right and I am just two people left of her with the long dark hair. This is our first grade picture.

She & I were never best friends, but I had been to her house and she had been to mine a few times when we were growing up. As neighbors, we still weren't all that close, but always had that Waverly connection. After we moved to our acreage in 1992, I didn't see her much. While we lived as neighbors, she and her husband divorced and she married a guy who had 3 boys like she did, all 6 boys lived with she and her new hubby in that 2-bedroom house! They did some remodeling, made the attached garage into two bedrooms, added a bedroom and bath in the basement and made out quite nicely. Of course now, their youngest child is almost 35, so they have long since had an empty nest. She told me about all the boys, and their lives, and then mentioned that her husband had esophageal cancer about 6 years ago. She said it really threw them, but they caught it early and after some extensive surgery, but no chemo because they caught it very early, he has been fine. She was always smaller than me, but then who wasn't? Well the tables have turned. She is now bigger than I am. She turned 61 on Saturday and I wished her a happy birthday. I'm one of those people who has a knack for remembering people's birthdays, and when you go to school with someone for 13 years, and celebrate their birthday every year just after school starts, you just remember. Or at least I do! She remembered my birthday too--but it's an easy one--Jan. 1! She is still working, but just 2 days a week at a doctor's office. Just before she and her first hubby split up, she went back to school and became an LPN, I'm sure she probably knew her marriage was on the rocks and she would need to support herself. She has put on a few pounds over the years and I got to thinking about that sad fact of life. As we age, we put on weight, even if we're skinny when we're young. I put on weight before I hit 20! But now I am fighting it more successfully than she is--go figure??? I read about how hard it is to lose weight after menopause....but I am living proof....it can be done.

Today I am recuperating at home, from having a back tooth pulled this morning. It's a little uncomfortable, but I took an aspirin and feel up to "Sparking" so I must be okay. It's nice to have another 3-day work-week anyhow! Down to under 60 days to work until retirement! I have been collecting a lot of recipes on Pinterest. I think I will be exploring some of those when I retire and have more time to cook!

I believe there were twice as many girls as boys in your class according to that school photo. The teachers I have known always counted the boys to girls ratio before school started to see what kind of year they were going to have. They would have expected a calmer year that year! Retirement is nice! You will love it because you keep busy outisde of work. And it is really just around the corner!

Sounds like you had a great weekend other than that Big Red loss. I love those old school pictures.
