Ran my first 10k today! Both stopwatches failed but I think I came in under an hour, which considering I'm a jogger not a runner, is OK for a first time I think. I made the beginner's mistake of starting too fast, which was made worse by the first bit being uphill. But hey, I made it to the end, I'm still standing (well, I'm sitting right now, but I could stand up any time I wanted to, honest), I made the marshalls laugh with my comments as I went round, I even got a not-specific-to-this-event medal (eventually... as I initially ran straight into a cooldown lap before the people on medal duty could get to me!). And I had a short massage after, which was very pleasant. So all in all, pretty good.
I'd say it's given me the urge to run longer distances, but didn't really make me feel like taking part in other events. I like the idea of running a marathon without getting anyone else involved, just get a bus to 26 miles away and run home... maybe someday I'll be up to that. There's a woman who runs around here who, going by the times and places I see her out and about (when I'm cycling and she's running), probably runs 20 miles + on a Saturday. I think that is awesome.
Meanwhile, for reasons too ridiculous to go into, the 10k has given me a new catchphrase, which is: "It's V.S. f***ing Naipaul!". Any attempt at an explanation would only disappoint, and I can't imagine getting a whole lot of opportunities to use it in my day-to-day life, but when an opportunity arises, you can bet I'll grab it.
