How many rapes result in pregnancy?

A national probability sample of 4008 adult American women took part in a 3-year longitudinal survey that assessed the prevalence and incidence of rape and related physical and mental health outcomes.

RESULTS: The national rape-related pregnancy rate is 5.0% per rape among victims of reproductive age (aged 12 to 45); among adult women an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year. Among 34 cases of rape-related pregnancy, the majority occurred among adolescents and resulted from assault by a known, often related perpetrator.

    When I was in college my roommate and I lived off campus in an apartment in town. I went home one weekend to visit my parents. Early that Sunday morning my roommate called me from the hospital to tell me a man had broken in and raped her by knifepoint. She was traumatized and terrified. As long as I live I will never forget the tone in her voice and the heartache I felt for her. The misery didn't end there. The rape resulted in a pregnancy. This many years later the entire ordeal is still a dreadful memory. When someone you know and love is put through something like this you all suffer from feelings of helplessness and rage. What kind of a mindset does someone have to violate another person's body? There was closure to this several months later. This man was shot to death during another rape by the victim's family member that the rapist didn't know was also in the house. The dead rapist was identified by 28 other victims by the scar on his hand that held the knife.
When this Missouri candidate was spouting such incredible misinformation about the physiology of womens bodies I wanted to reach through the TV and shake some education into him. In the aftermath, while they were all so busy distancing themselves from him, I heard not one word in an attempt to support rape victims OR to educate this apparently uneducated man. If I were not so angry at this man for his Neanderthal views I would be embarrassed for him. If he is this uninformed about this subject what else does he not know??? I can not imagine anyone actually voting for him in any state or party!

    Also consider that about 1/2 the women raped, do not report it, and the number climbs.

The reasoning was if you got pregnant it wasn't rape, so no abortion. They just want to cut ALL abortions, they don't actually believe this idea.

I would hope we can get to where a woman, and her doctor, can sit down and make health decisions, as I would, if I needed a little blue pill, or a vasectomy.

I think it will cost Romney the election, because most of America think that is just way too extreme.

    Thank you for this interesting information. It is particularly interesting given the misinformation given by a certain Republican candidate from Missouri.

It saddens me deeply to think of the Republican women still planning to loyally vote for Republican candidates even though not an ounce of compassion for rape victims was displayed by the party people when they tried to distance themselves from that particular candidate..

The Republican platform still would not allow a woman to receive an abortion even in the case of rape. Not good. Not good at all.

    Some people just don't want to see the truth. I am still in massive shock that, supposedly, a doctor said that women's bodies "shut down" to prevent pregnancy.

Not for a minute do I believe that any doctor would say such a thing!

I hope that statement ruined their chances of winning the election!

    Thank you for those statistics. I was not familiar with the latest ones, but from my years of experience with rape crisis team, it doesn't surprise me in the least. Unless someone has a close relationship with someone this has happened to or it has happened to them or work with those adolescents, they can't understand the horrible consequences the children having children must endure their entire lives and how often they are violated by classmates knowing what is going on with them when they not always understand themselves. Our youngest young lady to become pregnant by a relative I might add, was 10. She hadn't a clue what it all REALLY meant. She had heard "stuff" at school, but truly had no understanding of facts! Was it also mentioned how physically the pregnancy affected the girl and if she would be hindered in having a later viable pregnancy? It used to be most were still births and the girls very rarely had a viable afterwards. But that was a while ago and with new advances in science, it surely has changed. BTW,just fyi, our youngest was 2 months and our oldest 84. Those included males, too. One 12 year old male died three days afterwards. That was in the late 80's. The last time I read my hometown newspaper, the perp who pled guilty and was sentenced to life without parole, is still involved in the appeal process and it has been over 20 years!!!!!
