When your so big that just getting up off the floor puts you off of breath exercising seems like a daunting and impossible task. After 3 weeks of no exercise and just watching what I eat my body hit a plateau and I needed a serious kick in the behind to jump past it. But how do I find the time? I used this excuse for a LONG time.
Time is one thing that should never be an excuse to working out and it took me a long time to figure this out.. Too make matters worse I use to think about when I would time to work out while I sat there and watched t.v. I have never been this out of shape before because up until two years ago (even though I have been over weight for 8 years now) I played sports so deciding a starting point was difficult. I just decided to start moving, if I was sitting down for too long I would get up and do jumping jacks, just something, as long as I was moving.
I HATE running. absolutely HATE it, i think its the worst thing ever so one of the goals I have set for myself is to become better at it so that I can enjoy it more. I'm starting with a mile three times a week where I jog half and walk half. It's a totally attainable goal- even Biggest Loser contestants completed a mile their first week there! YES you will be out of breath and YES it will hurt but I promise the more you hurt during it the better you will feel after. I have discovered that I don't really crave the workout but I crave that high you get afterwards.
If you find this too difficult then start by just walking the whole mile but push yourself to where you feel uncomfortable. After you get better slowly add in running even if you only jog half a lap to begin with. Give yourself a building block and work from there! And if there are any moms out there like me then time may be limited but there is always a way to get in a little exercise.
Here are some other ideas that I have found to be useful as a mom who has limited time.
If you have a young one- follow all of his movements. My son just started walking and for exercise one rainy day I decided to follow him around copying his every move (squat when he would squat, bear crawl when he would crawl, etc.) and boy was that a work out! My legs were actually sore the next day!
If you kid is old enough to ride a bike but young enough where is isnt going super fast either then take him to a park and walk/jog to keep up with your kid. I promise they will LOVE it and you will be begging him to stop before long.
Don't just take your kids to the play ground actually get in there and play with them- navigating a place made for little ones it harder than it seems.
Take your kids favorite show and disect it. There is an example below:
For example: My son loves the show Sid the Science kid so I have come up with different exercises for different things that happen during the show.
1. When a song is being sung: Dance crazy until the song goes off.
2. Everytime a name gets said: Do 20 jumping jacks (you can get more specific by doing different exercises for all the different names). My son finds all my movement hilarious and tries to copy me!
I also waitress two nights a week and while I am there I constantly walk and try using a brisk pace... after 8 hours of this it adds up to a decent work out! So if your in a job where you can walk just try picking up that pace!
These are just a few things I have enjoyed doing while spending time with my son and getting a work out in at the same time.
Just remember, it doesn't matter how small you start as long as you start!
